Sadness of the World
Timo Tolkki Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Damian:]
"Isn't it beautiful here"?

I often come here to watch the sunsets
It is so beautiful and silent here always
It almost makes me think there must be something more
'Cause the beauty sometimes almost makes me cry
But I noticed you've already cried, my dear
It ain't easy the road that you've been travelling
But that bottle you try to hide is not the answer either
You can run but you can't hide from your fate

[Saana:]
I have bathed in Autumn rain entwining winter snow
I have kissed Spring blossoms in the Summer rain
But the tears of the ocean echo shadows in my soul
Cradled in my heart

[Damian:]
You will understand the things I say one day
I know that you have suffered much in your life
I know about your father and mother too
There are many things I've come to tell you

Do you know you have a heart of gold
And I can see the light shine in your eyes
You know the meaning of the pain
You have the sadness of the world in your eyes
In your eyes

[Damian:]

"Would you like to come over for a cup of coffee?
How's tomorrow for you? It's cabin number 3 at 7"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Timo Tolkki's song "Sadness of the World" convey a conversation between two individuals, Damian and Saana. Damian remarks that the place they are in is beautiful and expresses his emotions brought about by the view. This prompts Saana to open up about her life experiences and shares that she has seen the different seasons and felt their different weather conditions but is still haunted by the pain and tragedy she has withstood, causing echoes in her soul. Damian reassures her that she will come to understand the things he tells her one day, as he knows she has suffered much in life but also recognizes the light in her eyes and her ability to feel the pain and sadness in the world.

The lyrics delve deeper into the theme of human emotions - the beauty of the world that brings forth joy and inspiration, the pain and sadness that grips the human experience, and the complexity of human connections where a stranger might have the ability to empathize with one's struggles and offer words of comfort. The song is a message of hope and empathy for those experiencing pain, urging them not to run away from their fate but to embrace their emotions and recognize that their tragic experiences allow them to feel and understand the pain of the world around them.

One of the most touching pieces from Timo Tolkki. Not particularly made for the "tough" guys though; those don't (yet) have the ability to listen this properly. At their current state, these "tough" guys take also this piece as "very boring". These "tough" guys will return equipped with a very different consciousness one day. There is only Love.
