Turner began her career with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957. Under the name Little Ann, she appeared on her first record, "Boxtop", in 1958. In 1960, she debuted as Tina Turner with the hit duet single "A Fool in Love". The duo Ike & Tina Turner became "one of the most formidable live acts in history". They released hits such as "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep – Mountain High", "Proud Mary", and "Nutbush City Limits" before disbanding in 1976.
In the 1980s, Turner launched "one of the greatest comebacks in music history". Her 1984 multi-platinum album Private Dancer contained the hit song "What's Love Got to Do with It", which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became her first and only number one song on the Billboard Hot 100. At age 44, she was the oldest female solo artist to top the Hot 100. Her chart success continued with "Better Be Good to Me", "Private Dancer", "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)", "Typical Male", "The Best", "I Don't Wanna Fight", and "GoldenEye". During her Break Every Rule World Tour in 1988, she set a then-Guinness World Record for the largest paying audience (180,000) for a solo performer.
Turner also acted in the films Tommy (1975), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Last Action Hero (1993). In 1993, What's Love Got to Do with It, a biographical film adapted from her autobiography I, Tina: My Life Story, was released. In 2009, Turner retired after completing her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, which is the 15th highest-grossing tour of the 2000s. In 2018, she became the subject of the jukebox musical Tina.
Having sold over 100 million records worldwide, Turner became one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. She received 12 Grammy Awards, which include eight competitive awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first black artist, and first woman, to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone ranked her among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Turner has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame. She was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Ike Turner in 1991 and as a solo artist in 2021. She was a 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and Women of the Year award.
In 2020, she came out of retirement to collaborate with Norwegian producer Kygo on a remix of "What's Love Got to Do with It". With this release, she became the first artist to have a top 40 hit in seven consecutive decades in the UK.

Tina Turner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We kiss, come and we go
Like a breeze brushing your cheek
Like pain, like the tears on a face
Girls
Girls, we come and we go
Like spirits, we vanish at dawn
Like you, vanish like tears in the rain
Girls, we take our love away
Like spirits living so far away
Girls, pretending to break down and cry
Girls, whispering wind
Why do we give it away?
We used to be so happy
Remember, remember, so happy
I never knew how lonely
How lonely, how lonely
Could feel
Girls, we come and we go
We kiss, come and we go
Like spirits brushing your cheek
Ooh, like pain, like the tears on a face
Girls, we take our love away
Like spirits living so far away
Girls, pretending to break down and cry
Girls, whispering wind
What are we giving away?
We used to be, yeah, so happy
Remember, remember, so happy
I never knew how lonely
How lonely, how lonely
Could feel, could feel, could feel
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
like a memory
In this song, Tina Turner sings about the fleeting nature of love and relationships. She compares girls to fleeting things like a breeze or tears on a face, suggesting that women tend to come and go in people's lives like these things. Turner also speaks to the idea of love being temporary, saying that girls take their loves away like spirits and that they may vanish like tears in the rain.
The lyrics suggest that Turner is reflecting on her own experiences with relationships and love. She acknowledges the pain and loneliness that can come with love ending or a relationship falling apart, and seems to be questioning whether it's really worth it to invest so much time and energy into something that can be so temporary.
Overall, "Girls" is a poignant reflection on love, relationships, and the fleeting nature of life itself. The lyrics are deeply introspective and speak to the universal human experience of longing for connection, even if it means enduring pain and heartbreak.

This is the best rendition of Bowie's masterpiece! Tina took it to another level with her artistry and mighty talent and made it her own! Not appreciated enough over the years! this song needs JUSTICE!!!
Tasty Pies
Tina took the cake 🍰 in the 80s with "Private Dancer" and "Break Every Rule." This song is truly one of her best ones. Remarkable. She was experienced with the world but still young enough to enjoy both it and her well-earned success.

David Bowie who wrote it suffered from no pity and was more like a man trying to make his way to the finish line. He worked so hard to where it got him to and it’s highly admirable of him to not let his illness get in the way of projects. He made great songs for people like Tina Turner.

He didn't write it for Tina exclusively, it was his own song, but Tine made this version her own and took this masterpiece to whole another level! I will never get tired of this, especially the magnificent finale in my headphones floors me every time!

My favorite of Tina’s. Written by Bowie, but she gave it life.

She took it and elevated it and made it her own! Absolutely fantastic. Wish those too had collaborated on an album for Tina back in the day. That could've been EPIC!

I wish Bowie would have written an entire album for her. She pulled off this moody, arty vibe very effectively.

Bowie's style in lips of the absolute queen of rock of all times! But sadly the most underrated song of all times too. This is not just a song, this is A CLASSIC ANTHEM!
