Between 2007 and 2011, Tinashe was a member of the girl group the Stunners. Following their disbandment, she released the positively-reviewed self-recorded mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012). Following their success, Tinashe signed with RCA Records and released her third mixtape, Black Water (2013). Her debut single, "2 On" (featuring Schoolboy Q; produced by Mustard), reached number one on the Rhythmic airplay chart, and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Her debut studio album, Aquarius (2014), was noted by music critics as one of the most "solid" debuts by a new female artist in years. The album garnered her nominations for Soul Train and BET Awards.[5] Her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance the Rapper, "All My Friends", won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2016.[6] The same year, Tinashe appeared on Britney Spears' single "Slumber Party", which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Tinashe's second studio album, Nightride (2016), reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US. Joyride (2018), her third studio album, peaked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number six on the UK R&B Albums chart. After departing RCA, Tinashe independently released the albums Songs for You (2019), 333 (2021) and BB/Ang3l (2023).

Swear you don't know what you do
Got me thinking that I'm just
Maybe I'm in love with you
Yeah, I heard all that nonsense (Yeah, I know)
All them girls be all on you
But, I ain't here for no contest (uh)
When it comes to loving you
All the time, understand
When I hear 'bout your name
I just like how we vibe
We should ride, we should hang
Let's go low like a Lambo
Speed, never brake
Boy stop playing up your game
Only me in your lane
'Cause some things
We don't need to talk about
All you need
Is somebody to hold you down
Round the clock, running laps, 'round my mind, night and day
I'm like damn, not complainin', I'm just saying
Hardly ever speaking, it's been weeks, now where the time go?
I've been incognito and I blame it on the timezone (timezone, timezone)
No one likes a shady nigga, shady niggas fall back (fall back)
But, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt if you want that (oh)
Yet, why you all on my conscience?
(Why you on my conscience, baby?)
Swear you don't know what you do
Got me thinking that I'm just.. (Baby, uh)
Maybe I'm in love with you
Yeah, I heard all the nonsense, yeah (I know)
All them girls be all on you
But, I ain't here for no contest
When it comes to loving you, loving you
All the time, understand
When I hear 'bout your name
I just like how we vibe
We should ride, we should hang
Let's go low like a Lambo
Speed, never brake
Boy stop playing up your game
Only me in your lane
'Cause some things
We don't need to talk about, no
All you need
Is somebody to hold you down (you down)
Round the clock, running laps, 'round my mind, night and day
I'm like damn, not complainin', I'm just saying
You're all I need, you're all I want (you're all I need, you're all I need)
No fantasy, boy, you the one
Why you on my conscience now?
Why you all on my conscience?
I just like how we vibe
We should ride, we should hang, let's go
No one likes a shady nigga, shady niggas fall back
Maybe, I'm in love with you, yeah
But, I ain't here for no contest
When it comes to loving you (loving you, loving you)
The song No Contest by Tinahe Ft. Future is about the complicated feelings that arise when someone is in love with another person who may not feel the same way. The lyrics express the confusion and frustration felt by the singer towards the object of her affection, who is seemingly unaware of the impact they have on her. The first verse acknowledges the presence of other women in the object's life and states that the singer is not interested in competing with them. However, the chorus suggests that the singer may be falling in love with the object of her affection despite these complications.
The second verse touches on the fear of rejection and the desire to remain in the object's life, even if it means dealing with uncertainty and doubt. The repetition of the phrase "all you need is somebody to hold you down" suggests that the singer may see herself as that person for the object of her affection. The bridge asserts that the singer's feelings are real and not just a fantasy, but she is still not sure whether the object reciprocates these feelings.
Overall, the song captures the ambivalence and emotional turmoil that often accompanies the experience of falling in love. It acknowledges the presence of outside forces that complicate relationships and the difficulty of navigating these challenges.
