Between 2007 and 2011, Tinashe was a member of the girl group the Stunners. Following their disbandment, she released the positively-reviewed self-recorded mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012). Following their success, Tinashe signed with RCA Records and released her third mixtape, Black Water (2013). Her debut single, "2 On" (featuring Schoolboy Q; produced by Mustard), reached number one on the Rhythmic airplay chart, and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Her debut studio album, Aquarius (2014), was noted by music critics as one of the most "solid" debuts by a new female artist in years. The album garnered her nominations for Soul Train and BET Awards.[5] Her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance the Rapper, "All My Friends", won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2016.[6] The same year, Tinashe appeared on Britney Spears' single "Slumber Party", which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Tinashe's second studio album, Nightride (2016), reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US. Joyride (2018), her third studio album, peaked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number six on the UK R&B Albums chart. After departing RCA, Tinashe independently released the albums Songs for You (2019), 333 (2021) and BB/Ang3l (2023).

Tinashe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And everything you thought you know
Isn't what it seems
Only truth, truth will set you free
And I will never lie to you
So listen close to me
We've been eating these lies
What happened to our blue skies?
Yo, they be getting us young
Learn to love institution
This new world has begun
And we spend every day
Worrying 'bout the same shit
How am I gonna make it?
Every day reading from the same script
People lyin' down, we can change it, face it
This ain't where we're supposed to be
This is reverie
Hear my heartbeat, feel I'm real and
Sweetly singing, feed me diamonds
Truth is not the same as silence
Follow me towards these horizons
In the first verse, Tinashe starts by setting the tone of the song, describing a state of being in a reverie. A reverie typically refers to a state of pleasant daydreaming or reflection, but here it suggests a deeper realization or awakening. She challenges the listener's assumptions, stating that everything they thought they knew is not what it seems. She emphasizes the importance of truth, as it alone can set us free. Tinashe assures the listener that she will never lie to them and urges them to listen closely to her message.
Moving on to the second verse, Tinashe criticizes the prevalence of deception in society. She metaphorically likens it to consuming lies, which have been fed to us and influenced our perception of reality. She questions why the once clear blue skies have changed, pointing to the fact that our minds have been manipulated since a young age. Tinashe suggests that society encourages conformity and blind acceptance of institutions, trapping us in a new world that we have unknowingly entered.
In the third verse, Tinashe highlights how people spend their days consumed by worries and uncertainty about their future. She asks how they will ultimately succeed or make it through life's challenges. Tinashe emphasizes that society dictates a predetermined script that everyone follows, which breeds dishonesty. However, she acknowledges the need for change, urging people to face the reality that this is not where they are meant to be. Tinashe implies that a reverie, or a state of deeper awareness and reflection, is necessary to recognize this and take action to change it.
The final part of the lyrics speaks to the authenticity and truth that Tinashe embodies. She metaphorically expresses her realness through her heartbeat, implying that she is genuine and honest. Tinashe's ability to captivate and inspire is compared to sweetly singing, while the request for diamonds might symbolize a desire for authenticity and value amidst a society that often values materialism over substance. Tinashe emphasizes that truth should not be silenced and urges the listener to follow her towards a new horizon, a metaphor for a better and more honest future.
