According to the Pass Out Songfacts, Okogwu came up with his stage name at the age of 13. He looked up 'anger' in the thesaurus and found himself staring at 'temper.' Concerned it might be overly aggresive he added 'Tinie.'
Tinie Tempah first gained recognition in the underground music scene with the track Wifey, taken from his first official mixtape Hood Econ%mics Room 147: The 80 Minute Course. Upon it's release, the track became an instant smash, holding the Channel U urban chart top spot for 10 consecutive weeks. Established artists within the Grime scene including Bashy and Chipmunk featured on the mixtape. In 2009 Tinie Tempah released his second official mixtape Sexy Beast: Volume 1.
In October 2009 Tinie Tempah announced a record deal with EMI/Parlophone. He released his debut album on the label, disc-overy, on October 4th 2010. The album spawned six consecutive top 20 singles in the UK including number ones pass out and written in the stars, and swedish house mafia collaborative single miami 2 ibiza.
disc-overy is due for release in the US on May 17th 2011. The tracklist for the album features new collaborations with wiz khalifa, bei maejor and ester dean. It was preceded by written in the stars as it's lead single, which has thus far peaked at 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I tell the DJ what to play! Understand?
I make hitz, not the public
I tell the DJ what to play! Understand?
Baa baa black sheep, rock star, rap G
Make enough dough to own a black card, that's deep
And I don't mean Phil card or Hilary ya asking
P'hapz see me up in the vicinity and flash me
I'm the definition of definitive and catchy
The only thing that's bigger, quicker, slicker
More black and more upper London is a taxi
Bitch I'm so sick, I need a mother fucking vaccine
Pick your ring style like some other fucking fast weed
Centre of attention like a Bang & Olufsen
Hey Steevie reaching for a flat screen
The only ever time I see you niggers on kisses is like 2am or when you go to pucker up
Look 60 GM4 you need to buckle up
All my women so soon, all my women so nuts
So what and uncut and no fucking edits
She won't even get a high if she made no fucking effort
And all you silly singers and you ring tone rappers
Like school dinner curries
Don't fucking get it
My car is a unleaded
Got a yard with a terrace
She called me chauvinistic
But she can't even spell it
I don't wanna hear another nigga say you fly
If you ain't never been on business class on the Emirates
I'm a racket, I'm tennis
I'm Dennis, I'm a menace
Call me Rob Patterson, I got a lot of niggas jealous
I'm a mentos mint in a can of Dr Pepper
That's tick, tick, tick, tick, boom to you fellas
It's so important that your mighty Nigella
Ain't listening if her name ain't Remi or stella
Got a big bag of chips and Mary Poppin's umbrella
Cause we're 'bout to rain on them like London weather
In Tinie Tempah's song "Hitz", he asserts his power and influence in the music industry. The chorus repeats the line "I make hitz, not the public, I tell the DJ what to play", highlighting the idea that he is the one responsible for creating popular music rather than the audience. He continues with a series of rap verses that showcase his wealth, success, and self-confidence. He describes himself as the "definition of definitive and catchy", claiming that his music is the biggest and most popular in London, even bigger than a taxi. He also references his high-class lifestyle, owning a black card and traveling in business class on Emirates airlines.
Tinie Tempah's lyrics in "Hitz" also criticize other artists who he believes don't understand the music industry. He compares "silly singers" and "ring tone rappers" to unappetizing school dinners, implying that they lack talent and are only popular because of marketing. He also takes a swipe at people who only party late at night and don't work hard like he does, saying "all my women so soon, all my women so nuts". He ends the song with a reference to London's rainy weather, suggesting that he and his music are powerful enough to "rain on" anyone who tries to compete with him.
