Midnight
To The Stars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Staying up all night
I'm taking a midnight ride
Yes, I'm a midnight man
I can't hold it in
Hold it in

Spent time on the run
Love with a loaded six gun
I'm a fool not a clown
You got to hold me down
Hold me down

I'm like the one-eyed Jack
My love's blood to the max
Got loving and that's a fact
I can't hold it back
Hold it back

She knows I can't
She's the midnight girl
And I'm a midnight man

My clothes get inside out
Parting's all I know about
My head is feeling light
I got to hold it high
Hold it high, yeah

All across the world
Sounds to fill the night
Voices of friends
So loud, so loud
Loud, yeah

And I'm a midnight man
My head is spinning
Can feel it
Time for us to get wild

Can you feel it
My head is feeling right
I got to hold it high
Hold it high, hold it high

I'm staying up all tonight
Mama believe it
I'm taking a midnight ride
Mama believe it

I've got loving and that's a fact
And I can't hold it back
Hold it back, hold it back

She knows I can't

She's a midnight, midnight girl
And I'm a midnight man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of To The Stars's song "Midnight" hint at a wild night full of adventure and passion. The opening lines "Staying up all night, I'm taking a midnight ride, yes, I'm a midnight man" indicate that the singer is on a journey that could last until dawn. The repeated phrase "I can't hold it in, hold it in" suggests that the singer is feeling restless and wild, unable to contain their energy.

The verse following the chorus reveals more about the singer's background: "Spent time on the run, love with a loaded six gun, I'm a fool not a clown, you got to hold me down." These lyrics imply that the singer has a reckless past and is not afraid to take risks but they also acknowledge the need for someone or something to anchor them.

The second half of the song describes the singer's physical and emotional sensations as they move through the night. The lines "my clothes get inside out, parting's all I know about, my head is feeling light, I got to hold it high" convey a sense of exhilaration mixed with a hint of sadness or pathos. Overall, "Midnight" by To The Stars is an ebullient and fast-paced song about living life to the fullest and embracing the unexpected.

It's amazing how a random song from the 1930s can be turned into a cosmic horror abomination with the right context. Midnight, the Stars and You wasn't even that much of a hit during its time, yet it's probably the most well-known song of the sweet jazz era right now.
And with this in mind, I want to share with you a small list of tunes that, at least from my perspective, have that same empty ballroom feeling:
- Just Friends - Jack Denny
- In the Chapel in the Moonlight - Richard Himber
- You're My Everything - Roy Fox
- The Penalty of Love - Bert Lown
- Dancing in the Dark - Ambrose
- Lullaby of the Leaves - George Olsen (I know a lot might recognize this one, but it's still amazing)
- Gloomy Sunday - Hal Kemp
- Isn't it Romantic? - Harold Stern
- You're the One I Care For - Columbia Novelty Orchestra (with Annette Hanshaw)
EDIT: more tunes:
- Ah, But is it Love? - Adrian Rollini
- Time On My Hands - Ray Noble
- The House is Haunted - Vocal by Gracie Fields
- The Masquerade - Adrian Schubert
- By the River Sainte Marie - Guy Lombardo
- Old Roses - Little Jack Little
- The Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Jan Garber
Note to clarify: while I greatly appreciate the comments suggesting the Sid Phillips version of Heartaches (with Bowlly's vocals), I often omit the song in settings like this; because it isn't a ballroom/sweet jazz piece, but instead a hot jazz one (the tempo is too fast).
I would suggest, however, the Seger Ellis version of Heartaches, as the tempo is much more fitting and its overall feeling is far more melancholic.

Amazing, ain't it?
I'm an aging rocker, know not much of this musical era, but yet,
I'm attracted to this tune
Listen to it every once in while
Can't explain it, it just hits a vibe

@retrolake2019

Cheers to this masterpiece 🎉

@ChristopherMusselman-wt5xq

Yes... unfortunately, it is now, and will always be associated with a horror film.

The sad irony is, if Jack Torrance had just written down what was happening to him, he would have written The Shining, a very successful book.

@snubcube

No luck, he tried to do that but every sentence turned into "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

@thephonepersonally

@@snubcube my dad read the book and he told me jack wrote about the hotel whitout problems but the hotel exploded at the end. That means in every universe jack fails to write about the place in different ways.

@powpunkonwhiskey6377

🤣 now that IS the irony in it all.
