Lucky Guy
Todd Rundgren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some people don't seem real at all
Unafraid of any mountain
Sure that the gods won't let him fall
Should he fall, he will always get up again

If he's hurt, he never shows it
If he's wrong, nobody knows it
Seems like he never has to try
He just must be a lucky guy

And when there's pain, he never minds it
When it's lost, he always finds it
Nobody really knows just why

He just must be a lucky guy
I wish I was that lucky guy

Overall Meaning

In Todd Rundgren's song, "Lucky Guy," the artist explores the concept of a person who appears to be impervious to life's trials and tribulations. The subject, referred to as "Lucky Guy," is described as fearless, confident, and self-assured in the face of adversity, always relying on his own innate resilience to bounce back. He never lets anyone see his pain or vulnerability, and even when he is wrong, he manages to emerge unscathed. This is a sharp contrast to the singer, who wishes he could be more like this seemingly indestructible figure.

The song seems to be an expression of admiration and envy for Lucky Guy's abilities, while also acknowledging the difficulty of living up to such a lofty ideal. The song's lyrics capture the sense of isolation and defeat that often accompany feelings of inadequacy, as the singer struggles to find a way to emulate Lucky Guy's self-assuredness. The message of the song is that some people are innately gifted with good fortune and the ability to overcome obstacles, but that doesn't mean those without those skills should give up hope.

I don't know whether it's a double-tracked guitar or a synth solo but you might be right about that

thanks for liking my quote from the song "Lucky Guy", by Todd Rundgren. From Hermit at Mink Hollow. It's always nice to be greeted for something, if you know what I mean?

Dan Andersen

I've listened to Todd Rundgren for a long time. Hermit at Mink Hollow, I bought as one of my first records, and I still have it. He's nothing but an old hippie, with good music, and bad too, cause I don't like so much of his band Utopia. But some of it is a blessing in disguise.

Dan Andersen

I can be such a hard dog to listen to, and I don't have dislikes of younger people than myself, so I leave this, and delete my angry, stupid comment!
