The Wheel
Todd Rundgren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some people say life's like a merry-go-round
I think it's more like a Ferris wheel
'Cause sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down
Sometimes you just don't know what to feel
And just when you think you've got the game figured out
And you say you've had enough
The mysterious mad man with his hand on the lever
Don't seem to never ever want to let you off
You can't get off this wheel of karma
You can't stop the hands of time
Now I have a friend, I might have a few
Sometimes I think they just don't care
But I think sometimes they think the same thing of me, yeah
You might say we've got a problem there
You know we all got this habit
We like to talk too much
And that always tends to slow you down
But we never change direction
We just keep going round and round and round and round
And let me off this wheel of karma
Let me stop the hands of time
Seems like I've been around so many places
And I must have learned a lot of things
And although I ain't yet come up with a so-called answer
At least I think I finally learned how to sing
And there's j
Sometimes they make my brain get sore
Like if kids were left of all devices
Would they ever come up with a thing like war

Let us off this wheel of karma
Let us stop the hands of time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Wheel by Todd Rundgren are about the ups and downs of life, using the metaphor of a Ferris wheel. Life is not a simple merry-go-round where everything is steady and predictable. Instead, it's more like a Ferris wheel, with unpredictable movements, where you can be at the top at one moment and at the bottom the next. It's a confusing and overwhelming experience where you just can't figure out how to feel. You might sometimes think that you have everything under control, but the mysterious mad man controlling the lever will never let you get off. You're stuck, unable to stop the hands of time, and you can't escape the wheel of karma.

The song also touches on the theme of friendship, how people tend to talk too much and how this can hold them back. The singer has friends, but he feels like they don't really care about him, and sometimes he thinks the same thing about them. They all share the same habit of talking too much, but they never change their direction, they just keep going round and round. The singer also ponders on bigger issues of life. He has been around and learned many things, but he hasn't found an answer to the ultimate question of why there is war.

Overall, The Wheel is a poignant introspection on the human condition, presented in a simple yet powerful metaphor.

I remember first hearing this song while sitting in my car one night, I believe in late 1975. I was going through a stressful time, and I found particular comfort in this song. I find it kind of strange that Todd is best known for his Bang the Drum song, when he has much better songs like this one.

Thanks was just remembering this song the other day, and you put it out! - Have you come across a good version of 'Born to Synthesize', saw it live 'acapella' back in the day (late 70's).
