Long way home

And the more I give the more they want to take.
All the time we let slip away.
Keeps on haunting me,
All those sweet summer days take over every dream.
And it's a long way home.
It's such a long way home.
And it's a long way home.
Lot of bountiful lights, oh I see in your face.
Everybody's my best friend
But there's no one to take your place.
Every night I fall asleep to the sound of my wheels turning.
Another town, another show.
But no one knows the way I'm hurting.
And it's a long way home.
It's such a long way home.
And I feel your memory fade with every day I'm gone.
And it's a long way home.
What do you do when the 'dream comes true' is a nightmare.
When you leave them behind and there's no way to find your way back there.
It's just not fair. It's just not fair.
And it's a long way home.
It's such a long way home.
And I just gotta find my way back home baby.
The farther I go the further I get from you.
Tom Hambridge's song Long Way Home expresses feelings of loneliness and the struggle of being on the road as a professional musician. The lyrics convey the idea that success does not always bring happiness, and that material possessions often pale in comparison to the love and support of family and friends. The opening lines, "Everybody wants a little piece of me these days, and the more I give the more they want to take," show that the artist is feeling overwhelmed with the demands and expectations of others, potentially including fans, band members, and industry professionals.
The chorus, "And it's a long way home, It's such a long way home, And I feel your memory fade with every day I'm gone," highlights the challenge of staying connected to loved ones when constantly traveling. The artist is aware that his absence is having an effect on his relationships, but he is powerless to change the circumstances. The lines, "Lot of bountiful lights, oh I see in your face. Everybody's my best friend but there's no one to take your place," further illustrate the emptiness he feels, despite being surrounded by people. He recognizes his fans' admiration but feels that their attention is superficial, and no one can fill the emotional void left by being away from his loved ones.
The final verse, "What do you do when the 'dream comes true' is a nightmare. When you leave them behind and there's no way to find your way back there," shows the artist questioning whether the price of success is worth it. The chorus is repeated once more, emphasizing the longing to return home and the difficult journey to get there.
