Move It On Over
Tom Hiddleston and the Saddle Spring Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Came in last night at half past ten
That baby of mine wouldn′t let me in
So move it on over (move it on over)
Move it on over (move it on over)
Move over little dog 'cause the big dog′s moving in

She's changed the lock on my front door
My door key don't fit no more
So get it on over (move it on over)
Scoot it on over (move it on over)
Move over skinny dog ′cause the fat dog′s moving in

The dog house here is mighty small
But it's better than no house at all
So ease it on over (move it on over)
Drag it on over (move it on over)
Move over old dog ′cause a new dog's moving in

She told me not to play around
But I done let the deal go down
So pack it on over (move it on over)
Tote it on over (move it on over)
Move over nice dog ′cause a mad dog's moving in

She warned me once, she warned me twice
But I don′t take no one's advice
So scratch it on over (move it on over)
Shake it on over (move it on over)
Move over short dog 'cause a tall dog′s moving in

She′ll crawl back to me on her knees
I'll be busy scratching fleas
So slide it on over (move it on over)
Sneak it on over (move it on over)
Move over good dog ′cause a mad dog's moving in

Remember pup, before you whine
That side′s yours and this side's mine
So shove it on over (move it on over)

Sweep it on over (move it on over)
Move over cold dog ′cause a hot dog's moving in

Overall Meaning

In "Move It On Over," Tom Hiddleston and the Saddle Spring Boys depict a humorous and playful story of a man who arrives home late only to find his partner has locked him out. The lyrics convey his frustration and determination to regain entry into his home. The line "Came in last night at half past ten, that baby of mine wouldn't let me in" sets the scene, establishing the conflict. The man's solution is to "move it on over," urging his partner to make room for him by moving over. The lyrics use dog-related metaphors, emphasizing his dominance and the idea that he is the "big dog" moving in.

The song's chorus repeats the phrase "move it on over" with slight variations to create a catchy and memorable hook. Each verse presents different scenarios, such as the man finding a changed lock on his front door, his partner warning him about his behavior, and his refusal to heed her advice. The imagery of the dog house being small but better than no house at all portrays the man's determination to stay, even in challenging circumstances. The song concludes with the humorous notion that his partner will eventually return to him, crawling on her knees, but he will be too preoccupied with scratching fleas.

Overall, "Move It On Over" portrays a lighthearted and relatable situation of a couple's quarrel and the man's persistence to regain his place in the relationship. The lyrics employ clever wordplay and metaphors, making it an enjoyable and memorable song.

Tom even said in an interview, the one who taught him for the movie said "Hank is Hank and no one can replace him, but if you can convey what he wanted to say through his songs, then we'll listen... We'll all listen."
And the fact that we're all listening proves, Tom succeeded.

People saying he sounds nothing like the original singer. Well, that's okay. This is his best and he did a darn good job portraying the original. I bet it was hard yet the outcome is wonderful! Hands down to Tom.. I love this guy.

@Wargsy

People who say he doesnt sound like the original singer, probably dont understand he aint trying to sound like the original singer. Hes singing in his own voice, which is 100 times better then trying to sound like someone else. ^^

This film portrays the career of Hiram King "Hank" Williams, and his untimely tragic death at the age of 29. Tom Hiddleston did a marvelous job portraying the country music star, as well as his singing. Elizabeth Olsen also did a fantastic job playing Audrey, Hank's first wife. The film actually made me cry happily.

I'm sure Hank would've been proud.
He lives on through his music, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greats. RIP Mr. Williams, I hope you're smiling down on us all.
