Daughter Of Darkness
Tom Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woman, I can remember a woman
Warm were her kisses and tender was she
Lying there in my arms
Why, why did you deceive me so
What devil inside made you go
When I needed you most of all

Daughter of darkness
Stay out of my life, my life
You took my heart, you broke it apart
Daughter of darkness
Daughter of darkness
Please leave me alone forever
Daughter of darkness gone is the love
That we shared together

Heaven, we had our own kind of heaven
Sharing together, the magic of love
In a world of our own
Then oh so suddenly you were gone
The love I depended upon disappeared when you went away

Daughter of darkness stay out of my life, my life
You took my heart, you broke it apart
Oh daughter of darkness
Daughter of darkness leave me alone forever
Daughter of darkness gone is the love
That we shared together
Daughter of darkness stay out of my life, my life

You took my heart, you broke it apart
Oh daughter of darkness

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tom Jones's song Daughter of Darkness depict a man's anguish and sorrow over a relationship gone wrong. He reminisces about the warmth and tenderness of the woman he loved, who is now referred to as the 'daughter of darkness.' He asks why she deceived him, wondering what force made her leave when he needed her most. The man can't fathom how his 'own kind of heaven' with this woman could have vanished so suddenly, leaving behind only heartache and pain.

The repetition of the phrase 'daughter of darkness' serves to emphasize the bitterness and betrayal felt by the singer. He is pleading with the woman to leave him alone forever, acknowledging that the love they once shared is now gone. The choice of this phrase is an interesting one, as it suggests a sense of malevolence and evilness attached to the woman. It hints at a darkness and duplicity in her character that led her to hurt the man she loves.

In conclusion, this song is a heartbreaking ballad about betrayal and lost love. It offers a glimpse into the pain that comes with relationships that fail despite the promises of forever.

Nobody - not Freddie Mercury, not Elvis, not Aretha, not anyone - could belt out a song with such fiery passion like Tom Jones.

I share these sentiments

@michaelrowland199

Actually I do not think it fair to compare them. They are all different, all great but different. I love them all.

@PammWhittaker

Can't say that I agree. And Freddie outdid everyone in showmanship. That said, I have found exactly ONE cover of a Queen song that I loved. "Who Wants to Live Forever" by The Tenors with Lindsey Stirling.. it is awesome :)

@rickatherton7476

Absolutely correct and spot on. He could belt it out, and amazingly, still does.

In June of 1970, my two sister and I went to see Tom Jones perform in Boston. This was his latest song at the time. While we were waiting to watch him come on stage, a group of costumed singers passed by right in front of us, about a foot away. My younger sister said, "who the heck are they?" I said, "who knows?" Turns out they were his opening act...just a little group known as Gladys Knight and the Pips!

So cool, but it's funny how things like that do happen. Sometimes there's just too many people stage right and left, etc. I've crossed paths with a number of acts and actors. Back in 1982, coming back from Juneau, Alaska where I had an internship with the Coast Guard, I was waiting for my flight when I noticed the Atlanta Rhythm Section (towards the end of their popularity) waiting for the same flight. Must of done a concert thers. I mean what are the chances? Juneau is landlocked so either you fly in and out or take a slow boat. Also, I crossed paths with actor Peter Weller (Robocop, etc.) In a small bar/cigar bar where he kept his Cuban cigars in a super high quality huge humidor in New Orleans. My young wife and I were shooting the breeze very happily with the bartender when Weller walked up right behind me. I swallowed a gulp and right quick went back to my wife. It was pretty empty so Weller got on his laptop and smoked. We talked to the bartender again about celebrities. He said he couldn't name names except for former Miami Dolphins Quarterback Dan Marino who he said was the biggest entitled jerk that he'd ever dealt with. Go figure.
