Heal
Tom Odell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take my mind
And take my pain
Like an empty bottle takes the rain
And heal, heal, heal, heal

And take my past
And take my sins
Like an empty sail takes the wind
And heal, heal, heal, heal

And tell me some things last
And tell me some things last

And take a heart
And take a hand
Like an ocean takes the dirty sand
And heal, heal, hell, heal

And take my mind
And take my pain
Like an empty bottle takes the rain
And heal, heal, hell, heal

And tell me some things last
And tell me some things last

And tell me some things last
And tell me some things last

Overall Meaning

In Tom Odell's song Heal, the singer is asking for someone or something to take away his pain, both physical and emotional. He wants to be relieved of his burdens and asks for a healing power to help him overcome his struggles. He uses metaphors to convey his message; just like an empty bottle takes the rain, he wants his mind and pain to be taken away so they can be replaced with something positive. The same goes for his past and sins, which he wants to be taken away like an empty sail takes the wind.

The next verse describes his heart and hand being taken away, like an ocean takes away dirty sand. This line of the song can be interpreted in two ways. He could be describing his heart and hand as the dirty sand and asking to have it replaced with something pure like the ocean. Alternatively, he could be describing the ocean as the problem and is to be taken away by his heart and hand. However, both interpretations end with the same goal--heal.

The chorus repeats the first verse, emphasizing the importance of being healed from the pain and burden. The final verse ends with the same question as the first verse, asking for someone or something to heal him and reminding them to tell him that some things last.

Overall, the song Heal is a cry for help from someone who is in distress, who wants to be relieved of their burdens and healed of their pain.

We all have sinned, and have broken God’s law (The Ten Commandments). Wrong doing deserves justice and must be punished (just like how a criminal has to pay for the crime they have committed) but God saved us from the eternal punishment of our sins by sending His Son Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for us, so that we may have everlasting life. Now for you to accept the free gift of grace, you must repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ and you will you be saved from eternal punishment, and be given everlasting life. By faith you will receive the Holy Spirit and He will transform your heart and clean you from the inside out. Turn away from sin, read Bible, pray for Jesus to reveal Himself to you and change you, seek to do what is right according to the Bible. Much love and God bless.
