Here I Am
Tom Odell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought I was over you
I'd put out the flame
Said tonight will be different
I wouldn't need to play your games
I walk past your tower block
Saw a flick in the blinds
I said tonight will be different
And that I won't come back

Here I am
Running up the seventh floor
Knocking the eleventh door
I'mma sick of trying
I'mma sick of trying
Baby could I love you some more
Baby could I love you some more

Told myself I's a prisoner
And I'd broken my chains
That I could be anyone
I'd run a thousand miles away
And I imagined America
Somewhere as far
Someplace where the memories
They couldn't cut my heart

But here I am
Running up the seventh floor
Knocking the eleventh door
I'mma sick of trying
I'mma sick of trying
Baby could I love you some more
Baby could you love me some more?
Baby could you love me some more?
Baby could you love me some more?

'Cause I'm going out my head here, darling
Going out my head here, darling
Going out my head here, darling
Going out my head here, darling

But here I am
Running up the seventh floor
Knocking the eleventh door
Saying what I've said before
Baby could you love me some more?
Baby could you love me some more?
I'm going out my head here, darling

I'm going out my head here, darling
I'm going out my head

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tom Odell's "Here I Am" depict a love that the singer thought they had moved on from. They express a sense of frustration and disappointment in themselves for still having feelings for someone who has hurt them. The repetition of "I thought I was over you" emphasizes this sentiment, as if the singer is telling themselves over and over again that they should have moved on. However, despite their efforts to forget, they find themselves outside the tower block where their former lover lives, unable to resist the temptation to see them again. The imagery in the second verse suggests that the singer tried to escape their feelings by running away to America, but they found no solace there.

The chorus, with its repetition of "Baby could you love me some more?" reveals the root of the singer's inner turmoil: they still love their former lover and want them to reciprocate those feelings. The repetition of the phrase "I'm going out my head here, darling" further emphasizes the singer's emotional distress. The line "Saying what I've said before" in the final chorus suggests that this is not the first time the singer has tried to rekindle their relationship, and their desperation is beginning to feel cyclical.

Overall, the lyrics to "Here I Am" explore the difficulty of moving on from a past love and the inner turmoil that can come with still having feelings for someone who has hurt you. The repetition throughout the song emphasizes the singer's inner struggle and desperation.

To the people that don't know what this is a reference to. It's one of the best stories written by one of the best authors ever Franz Kafka. The story depicts a man running around in a building who keeps climbing stairs but get's no where and how it is a depiction of life, society and so on. It's a good, if not the best read ever.

What is the name of this book? It sounds so interesting!

Diana A

It is named "The Castle" by Franz Kafka. Also, "The trial" is even better! That story is about a man convicted of a trial he has no idea about and no one tells him what he has done or why. And as the story progresses you see it through his eyes.

Ah cool, I can't wait to look into them, thank you! :)

Tom Odell is one of the best vocalists in these times, his voice live is unmatched, his videos are so well prepared, their lyrics are magnificent, deserves much more recognition is so incoherent that artists who have talent and are only commercial have hundreds of millions of visits, while artists like Tom Odell deserve that and more, really hope Tom is invited to record with Adele or Sia, their joined voices must be amazing.

Does anyone else agree with me?
