After working with his early bands The Sundowners, The Epics, and Mudcrutch (which also included future Heartbreakers members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench) he began his recording career with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers when the band broke onto the national music scene with their 1976 self-titled debut album. Still, it took America a full year to catch up to the album. "Breakdown" was re-released to radio and became a Top 40 hit in 1977 after word filtered back the band was creating a firestorm in England.
He was also a member of The Traveling Wilburys, along with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. Petty and the Heartbreakers also toured as a backing band for Bob Dylan.
Petty is a vocal critic of the modern recording industry, including the disintegration of independent radio stations.
Petty has been supported by his band, The Heartbreakers, for the majority of his career. He has occasionally released solo work, as is the case with his 2006 effort, Highway Companion, on which he performed most of the backing instrumentation himself. Examples of other solo albums include Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers
Petty died on 2 October 2017 following a cardiac episode earlier that day at his home in Malibu, California. Although some media outlets incorrectly reported his death following an erroneous police report, his death was confirmed later that day by his publicist and manager.

I'm so hung up I can't get her out of my mind
Could it be just stars in my eyes
Could it be this won't happen twice
We're overdue for a dream come true
Long time, nothing new
She said she's going to move to California on day
Said she's going out on safari to stay
She's tired of her job and the snow
We both need somewhere to go
We're overdue for a dream come true
Long time, nothing new
We're overdue for a dream come true
I'm so hung up on her now
I'm so strung out on her now
A gift from the sun to the moon
I hope something changes soon
We're overdue for a dream come true
Long time, nothing new
We're overdue for a dream come true
We're overdue for a dream come true
Long time, nothing new
We're overdue for a dream come true
The lyrics of "Hung Up and Overdue" by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers tell the story of a love that seems to be fading away but the singer is unable to let go. He is so hung up on the woman that he decides to go see her even though he can't stop thinking about her. The lyrics show a sense of desperation and a longing for a dream to come true. The singer is questioning if this feeling is real or if he's just caught up in the moment. He wonders if the stars in his eyes are blinding him, and if this feeling is just a one-time occurrence.
The woman in question is planning to leave for California or on a safari, away from her seemingly monotonous job and the snow. The singer feels like they both need to be somewhere else, that they're overdue for something new, and a dream come true. They are looking for a change in their lives, something to break the monotony of their routines, and bring them closer together.
Overall, "Hung Up and Overdue" portrays a feeling of restlessness and uncertainty about the future, along with the longing for something exciting to happen. The lyrics explore themes such as taking risks, being in love, daydreaming, and searching for a more fulfilling life.

Wildflowers Album is one of the best ever, but with adding these songs, it has elevated the album to "All things must pass" territory. Tom knew this album would be his legacy. Thank you Tom, Mike, and Rick.

New doc proves your comment way valid. Saw it tonight with my boy. Fantastic! Miss the King Bee every day.

Wildflowers is superior to All Things Must Pass.

It's funny you mention that, cause they were in that supergroup Traveling Wilburys.

Really nice song that unfortunately didn't make it onto the original Wildflowers album, one of my faves by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Beautiful harmonies with Carl Wilson, Ringo on drums!

โSheโs The One?โ
No Tom...YOUโRE THE ONE!
Just incredible...Carl Wilson on backing vocals as one of his last recorded works makes me feel even more nostalgic...and sad that weโve lost so many incredible musicians that can create a spirituality of a song like this...
