Filipino Box Spring Hog
Tom Waits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hung on to Mary's stump
I danced with a soldier's glee
With a rum-soaked crook and a big fat laugh
I spent my last dollar on thee
I saw Bill Bones, gave him a yell
Kehoe spiked the nog
With a chain-link fence and a scrap-iron jaw
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog

Spider rolled in from Hollister Burn
On a one-eyed stolen mare
Donned himself with chicken fat
Sawin' on a jawbone violin there
Kathleen was sittin' down in Little Red Recovery Room
In her criminal underwear bra
I was naked to the waist with my fierce black hound
And I'm cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog

Dig a big pit in a dirt alley road
Fill it with madrone and bay
Stinks like hell and the neighbors complain
Don't give a hoot what they say
Gotta slap that hog
Roll em over twice
Gotta baste him with a sweeping broom
You gotta swat them flies and chain up the dogs
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog

Rattlesnake piccata with grapes and figs
Old brown Betty with a yellow wig
Tain't the mince meat filagree
And it ain't the turkey-neck stew
And it ain't them bruleed okra seeds
Though she made them especially for you
Worse won a prize for her bottom black pie
The beans got thrown to the dogs

Jaheseus Christ, I can always make room
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog

Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog
(Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog, cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog)

Overall Meaning

The song “Filipino Box Spring Hog” by Tom Waits tells a story of a group of people who gather to cook and enjoy a hog, which is being roasted in a big pit in a dirt alley road. The lyrics describe the scene with vivid imagery, capturing the atmosphere of revelry and chaos around the event. The singer seems to be present at the gathering, singing about his experience hanging on Mary's stump and dancing with a soldier's glee. He mentions different characters such as Kehoe, Bill Bones, and Spider, who contribute to the merry chaos of the event.

The Filipino box spring hog is a recurring theme in the song. The “Filipino” part refers to the method of cooking and preparing the hog, which is done in the same way as in the Philippines. The “box spring” part refers to the fact that the hog is prepared on a bed of old box springs. This method is known for producing juicy and tender meat, as the box springs create a steaming and moist environment. The chorus repeats the line “Cookin' up a Filipino Box Spring Hog” several times, emphasizing the centrality of this activity to the overall scene.

All of Tom Waits songs sound like a drunk, undiagnosed schizophrenic wrote and performed them and I mean that only in the most sincere form of praise possible.

@daddyzhoam

If you had told me a year ago that my favorite song of 2021 was going to be about cooking pork on a mattress...

@oevr37

On a boxspring, not a mattress. A mattress would not lend itself very well for cooking on top of, with all the toxic fumes and stuff. Now that is not to say there would not be a big cloud of stench otherwise. You can handily burn off the hair from your fellow mammal and by which create a big cloud of stench all the same, but then at the same time render your meal more edible instead of decreasing the edibility thereof.

@Soft_Machine

Definitely one of my favorite vocal performances of his

@SenatorNyxen

It's among the most unhinged, but so so good. Not a good song to introduce people to him with though 😅

@nilssonakerlund2852

Whenever I'm smoking a pork roast in the yard, this song pops in my head.

Got the mail. Got the candy. Got the nail & got the brandy.

Might be too late to Lu'au.

Brilliant

@RockandrollNegro

If you play it at 1.25x speed, it sounds like a Primus song.
