Time
Tom Waits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, the smart money's on Harlow and the moon is in the street
And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of East Saint Louis and the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
And Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon
His invisible fiancee's in the mirror
And the band is going home, it's raining hammers, it's raining nails
And it's true there's nothing left for him down here

And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time, that you love
And it's time, time, time

And they all pretend they're orphans and their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember tell the things you can't forget
That history puts a saint in every dream

Well, she said she'd stick around until the bandages came off
But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit
And Mathilda asks the sailors "are those dreams or are those prayers?"
So close your eyes, son, and this won't hurt a bit

Oh, it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time that you love
And it's time, time, time

Well, things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl
The boys just dive right off the cars and splash into the street
And when they're on a roll she pulls a razor from her boot
And a thousand pigeons fall around her feet
So put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips
As the dish outside the window fills with rain
Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart
And pay the fiddler off 'til I come back again

Oh, it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time that you love
And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time

And it's time, time, time that you love
And it's time, time, time

Overall Meaning

Tom Waits's song "Time" is a haunting and melancholy tale of lost dreams, forgotten memories, and the ravages of time. The imagery in the song is vivid and evocative, painting a picture of a world that has lost its way and is searching for something to hold onto.

The first verse sets the scene, with the "smart money" placing their bets on Harlow, while the shadow boys break the law. The singer finds himself in East Saint Louis, with the wind making speeches and the rain applauding. Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon, while his invisible fiancée looks on from the mirror. The band is going home in the rain, and there's nothing left for Napoleon down here. The chorus repeats the word "time" three times, emphasizing its importance.

The second verse begins with people pretending to be orphans, with memories that get smaller as they pull away. Unforgettable things are forgotten, and history puts a saint in every dream. A woman named Mathilda asks sailors if their dreams are prayers, and the singer tells his son to close his eyes so it won't hurt a bit. The chorus repeats twice more, with the same haunting melody.

The final verse is about a "calendar girl" who laments the state of things. Boys dive off cars and splash into the street, and when they're on a roll, the girl pulls a razor from her boot, and pigeons fall around her feet. The singer tells someone to put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips, and to pay the fiddler off until he comes back again. The final repetition of the chorus brings the song to a close, leaving us with the sense that time is slipping away, and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

Tempo

His voice does magic to the soul~

dikbozo

A song that is uncoverable, to coin a word, like most of Tom Waits' oeuvre. He recorded this version like a simple folk tune and the intimacy of it will eventually hit you like a freight train. It is also amongst his finest work if not the finest.

Lisa Noelle

Tori Amos does a good job if you aren't looking for the rawness of Tom's voice.

dikbozo

@Lisa Noelle Her version is amongst the best if not THE best cover. Tom's is THE definitive version, full stop, period. Thanks. I wasn't aware she had covered it and I do like her stuff.

This song breaks me every time I listen to it. My dad died in March after a long battle with cancer. He beat it twice, but it took him on the third go-round. I miss him so much. I miss him more everyday. It just doesn't seem like time is making it any easier. I've been through this before. My brother was taken from us four years ago. I can now think of him with a smile instead of tears. It's just different with my dad. Oh how I miss him. I miss his smile, I miss his voice, I miss his smell, I miss arguing with him, I miss teasing him, I miss his great big hugs that would engulf me because he was 6'5". I just miss everything about him. My heart hurts😥💔

Lost my gran when a car hit her. O you should have heard her sing, the world became silent and hearkened with her song. I wish you strength. Death is a part of life. We just have to live with it lingering around. And hold everything beloved and dear to us in our hearts

I am sorry for your loss. I miss my father also. Your dad is a wonderful man and I am glad you were gifted with him.

Becca Brown that was a beautiful, sincere, heartfelt statement and I love you for sharing your feelings and baring your soul. It will get better. My dad shows up in my dreams once in a while. He doesn't speak to me ( the dead usually don't) but he DOES show up.
