Get It Together
Tomas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The man who only lives for making money
Lives a life that isn't necessarily sunny
Likewise the man who works for fame

There's no guarantee that time won't erase his name
The fact is, the only work that really brings enjoyment
Is the kind that is for girl and boy meant
Fall in love and you won't regret it
That's the best work of all, if you can get it
Holding hands at midnight

'Neath a starry sky
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try
Strolling with the one girl
Sighing sigh after sigh
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
It's nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"

Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow

Nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tomas's song "Get It Together" explore the concept of finding true fulfillment in life. The opening lines highlight the pursuit of money and fame as potential paths to happiness, but they also acknowledge that these endeavors do not necessarily lead to a sunny and fulfilling life. The subsequent lines emphasize that the only work that truly brings enjoyment is the kind of work that is meant for love and companionship between a girl and a boy.

The song suggests that the best and most rewarding work one can have is to fall in love and build a lasting relationship. The lyrics describe the beauty of holding hands with a loved one under a starry sky, strolling together, and sharing intimate moments. It portrays love and companionship as the ultimate source of fulfillment and happiness in life.

The lyrics further delve into the idea of finding someone who waits for you at the cottage door, where two hearts become one. This symbolizes the sacredness of a committed relationship and the deep connection between two people. The song concludes with a plea to those who have found such love to share how they achieved it, implying that true love and fulfillment are highly desired but can be elusive.

Overall, "Get It Together" encourages listeners to prioritize love, companionship, and deep connections in their lives, suggesting that true happiness and fulfillment can be found through these meaningful relationships.

Tell me why, tell me why, tell me why
Why can't we live together
Tell me why, tell me why
Why can't we live together

Everybody wants to live together
Why can't we be together

No more war, no more war, no more war
Just a little peace
No more war, no more war
All we want is some peace in this world

Everybody wants to live together
Why can't we be together

No matter, no matter what color
You are still my brother
I said no matter, no matter what color
You are still my brother

Everybody wants to live together
Why can't we be together

Everybody wants to live
Everybody's got to be together

Everybody wants to live
Everybody's going to be together

Everybody's got to be together
Everybody wants to be together

I said no matter, no matter what color
You're still my brother
I said no matter, no matter what color
You're still my brother

Everybody wants to live together
Why can't we be together

I agree .Sounds as fantastic as when I first heard it in a "disco " in 1973 . The lyrics have such a positive message too . The record should have been a much bigger hit that's for sure .

I walked into my first ever nightclub at the age of 17 in 1978 and this was playing through a smokey haze, dimly lit by a cheap sound to light system…I had my new girlfriend on my arm and I truly thought I’d died and gone to heaven.
God I was lucky.

Actually written by Noel George Williams, aka King Sporty. The same Jamaican native who with Bob Marley, wrote Buffalo Soldier. Don’t know why he sold the copyright.
