Tomatito became a flamenco sensation at an early age when he was discovered by famed guitarist Paco de Lucía and began working in part with legendary flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla.
In 1979, the trio produced a hit called "La Leyenda del Tiempo." Their partnership continued until Camarón's death in 1992.
A later collaboration included pianist Michel Camilo, producing the albums Spain (2000) and Spain Again (2006).
Tomatito's music is a unique mix of traditional flamenco and jazz. On some albums, such as Barrio Negro, he experimented with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Music. He has also worked with flamenco singers Duquende and Chano Domiguez among many others.
Tomatito has produced six solo albums and in 2005, won a Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Record, for his album Aguadulce.

The lyrics to Tomatito's song Cañailla speak about the pain of unrequited love. The first line, "Ándale y repicale a lo orgulloso amor" can be translated to mean "go ahead and play to proud love" and can be interpreted as a challenge to the singer's own pride as he attempts to convince himself to reach out to the object of his affection. He then goes on to say "Anda y ve, dile porque llora mi corazon" which means "go and tell him why my heart is crying". We can assume from this that the singer has been rejected by the person he loves and is trying to find closure by expressing his emotions.
The singer then goes on to say "Si solo intento vivir con mi triste alegría", which translates to "if I only try to live with my sad happiness". This line is particularly poignant because it speaks to the feeling of trying to move past heartbreak and finding joy in everyday life, even though sadness still lingers. He concludes the verse by saying "Haciendo cálido el recuerdo de aquel día, Por eso quiero que salga el sol, Y soñar con tus versos, Tú y siempre tú" which means "making warm the memory of that day, that's why I want the sun to come out, and dream with your verses, you and only you". This describes the comfort he takes in reminiscing about the good times he shared with his love and how he longs to be with them again.

De las alegrías más bonitas que hay. El año pasado, en el curso de verano que se hace en la universidad de Almería contó Tomatito la anécdota de que para esas alegrías necesitó una guitarra y Paco le prestó la suya de los conciertos, la roja del desconchón, y por lo visto era muy dura y Tomate dijo pero esto qué eeeeeé Paco, si esto es una jaula, y Paco ss descojonaba

Para mí una de las referencias en Alegrías ! Pasé horas para sacarla en los noventa cuando no había partituras ...Así que la cocozco más que de memoria , casi más que el propio autor ...Pero sigo fascinado por la composición !
