We Three Kings
Tommee Profitt & We The Kingdom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

Oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh, oh
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, voices raising
Worshiping God on high

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone cold tomb

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Sounds through the earth and skies

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Oh-oh-oh

Your perfect light (whoa)
Oh-oh-oh

Overall Meaning

The song "We Three Kings" by Tommee Profitt & We The Kingdom is a traditional Christmas carol that tells the story of three wise men or magi who came from the East to visit the baby Jesus in Bethlehem, guided by a star. The first verse describes the journey of the three kings as they travel through various terrains and landscapes, in search of the newborn King. They carry precious gifts with them, such as gold, frankincense, and myrrh, which symbolize Jesus’ divinity, priesthood, and death, respectively. The star they follow illuminates their path and leads them to the Savior.

The second verse talks about the significance of Jesus’ birth in the town of Bethlehem. He is not an ordinary child, but a King who deserves to be crowned with gold and honored forever. The three kings acknowledge his sovereignty and rule over all mankind. The star that they see in the sky is not just a natural phenomenon, but a miraculous sign from God that points to the Messiah's birth. It inspires them to keep going until they reach the end of their journey and find the object of their desire.

The third verse describes the three gifts in more detail, explaining how each one reflects a different aspect of Jesus’ mission on earth. Frankincense represents the worship that Jesus receives from believers, as he is a High Priest who intercedes for them before God. Myrrh, on the other hand, is a spice used in embalming dead bodies, foreshadowing the death and burial of Jesus. The tone of the verse turns somber as it speaks of Jesus' eventual suffering and death, which is necessary for the salvation of humanity. The final chorus exalts Jesus as the King, God, and sacrifice who came to save the world from sin, and invites everyone to join in the heavenly choir who sings "Alleluia" to his name.

I've always loved this Christmas song. The first time I listened to this cover I teared up. There is so much power behind these voices mixed with the impactful words. Not many songs bring me to tears. This one almost does every time.

@zachtaylor8222

I was looking forward to this one the most. It was my favorite as a kid. Inwas worried that my expectations were set too high and I would be disappointed. You crushed this. This is a song worthy of a King.
