Tea for Two Cha Cha
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm discontented with homes that are rented so I have invented my own
Darling this place is a lover's oasis
Where lights where we chase is unknown
Far from the cry of the city where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in,
To live side by side in, don't let it abide in my dream

Picture you upon my knee, just tea for two and two for tea
Just me for you and you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations or weekend vacations
We won't have it known, dear, that we own a telephone, dear

They will brake and you'll awake and start to bake a sugar cake
For me to take for all the boys to see

We will raise a family, a boy for you and a girl for me
Can't you see how happy we will be

Overall Meaning

In the song "Tea For Two Cha Cha" by Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the lyrics express the singer's discontentment towards rented homes and their desire to have a place of their own. They have created a tranquil and cozy environment, where there is no disturbance and the only focus is on spending quality time with their significant other. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the lovers' abode is surrounded by vibrant flowers and a gentle stream that add an aesthetic touch to their oasis. The lyrics suggest that the singer dreams of a life where they live side by side with their lover, in the comfort of their abode. The singer imagines a scenario where they would sip tea with their lover, all alone and happy, with no one to witness their moment of tenderness. They dream of a life where they would raise a family, with a boy for their partner and a girl for themselves. Altogether, the song, with its upbeat Cha Cha rhythm, paints a romantic, idyllic, and aspirational picture of a happy relationship.

This takes me back. I was a DJ at a nostalgia format station and I always loved this piece. It still makes me smile.

If I had kids today I would only have 50s music playing in the home.
Start them off young learning to appreciate great music.

Love this ! His brother Jimmy also had a hit the year before with "So Rare" just weeks before his death from cancer.

Back in the day when I had two turn tables a cassette recorder, and a mixer I would have this record on one turntable and on the other turntable a record of animals soundeffects. At every pause on the cha cha record I'd slip in an animal noise. It's the funniest tape I've ever recorded 🤣 still have it!👍
