Blue Skies
Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra Feat. Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue skies (look up, look up) smilin' at me
(Take the azure in the dome, boy)
Nothin' but blue skies (it's mellow, fellow) do I see
(Blue skies, blue skies)

Bluebirds (did you ever) singin' a song
(Hear the bluebirds singin' the blues)
Nothin' but bluebirds (you won't say no) all day long
(The happy little birds, flap, flap happy)
(Sunshine everywhere, and everybody's happy)
(As a square at the fair, hoy, hoy)

All the days are hurryin' by
When you're in love, my how they fly
Blue days (talk about blue)
All of them gone (makes no misery, hmm, hmm)

Nothin' but blue skies (overhead)
From now on (Mister Elman, go ahead, go ahead)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Blue Skies" by Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra Feat. Frank Sinatra talk about the joy that comes with a sunny day. Frank talks about how blue skies are smiling at him and all he sees is blue skies. Bluebirds singing their beautiful song is what he hears all day long. He goes on to describe how happy everyone is, giving the example of everyone being happy like a square at the fair.

The lyrics also talk about the effect love has on time, it seems to fly by so quickly. Frank mentions that all the days seem to hurry by when you're in love. The blue days that he had before being in love have gone away and now he has nothing but blue skies from now on. The ending of the song features a trumpet solo by Elman.

I love these old recordings! With all the technical advances which followed, something was lost- this has such muscle, punch and "honesty". It's there in your ears. happening right there and then. Those studio engineers really knew what they were doing! And so did the musicians. God, could those guys play...

@Broonzied

This take on this song is my favourite Frank number. Its all perfect. The vocal, the band, the backing, the feel and the arrangement. Perfect.

Some lady at the grocery store I work at complained about the music played over our intercom. Our boss agreed to make a change and started playing Jazz, Band, and Classical music. That how I discovered this song... Wish I had the chance to thank that lady

I personally love the vocal chorus.  I think it depicts those times somehow.

Thanks for posting these old songs -- it's very interesting to hear Sinatra in his very young years!

Without Tommy we may never  have had Frank, at least the Frank we know now for he contributed his phrasing and breath control from Tommy's playing.

you are so right MsRockett88!

Another story goes that he learned it from Jo Stafford when they were both with Dorsey but wouldn't admit he got so much of his sound from a woman. She was operatically trained and is renowned for the purity of her voice.
