Girl Like You
Tompall Glaser Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a jukebox in my ear playing so loud I can hardly hear
And it's a telling a story bout a girl like you
And each selection that I make tells me how my heart will break
For falling in love with a girl like you
Well it's just an old machine without a heart and oh so mean
Says I probably spend my whole life feeling blue
So I'll just put in one more dime and play that same song one more time
Cause I want to hear about a girl like you
[ steel ]
Well it's just an old machine without a heart and oh so mean
Says I probably spend my whole life feeling blue

I guess that I should go on home but I can't stand to be alone
Cause I'll always dream about a girl like you

Overall Meaning

The song "Girl Like You" by Tompall Glaser talks about a man who falls in love with a certain type of woman represented by the song playing on the jukebox. The song is so vivid that it almost feels like a real person, and the man is drawn to the idea of someone like her. However, the jukebox warns him against falling for this type of woman, saying that she will break his heart. Despite the warning, the man can't help but want to hear more about this "girl like you."

The lyrics express the idea that sometimes love can be dangerous and unpredictable, but it's still worth pursuing. The metaphor of the jukebox playing these songs about a girl like you represents the way that we are drawn to certain types of people, even when they may not be the best fit for us. The man is willing to take the risk and potentially suffer heartbreak for the chance to experience the thrill and excitement of being with someone like the girl in the song.

Overall, the song is a testament to the power of attraction and how it can lead us down unexpected paths, both good and bad.

Everytime I hear this song it takes me back when I was a child & my dad asking me to listen to it. I remember him telling me "you've never heard harmony like this before & you'll never will again". He was right.

That is a great country song, perfect vocals and instruments.

The perfect country song. Love, heartache and a jukebox all wrapped up in an incredible song written by the always amazing Tompall and sung to perfection by the brothers.

Thank you. Yes, there are a couple of good, real country singers left. They just can't get any radio play. I'm just gonna stick with the classics. I'll never stop promoting the fabulous Glaser brothers until they get their rightful place in the Hall of Fame. They've more than earned it. Linda

Linda, I'm like you, only traditional ocuntry. I called our local "country" station and asked if they took requests. She said yes, what do I want to hear. I told her "A Real Country Song. She said okay but what do I want to hear. I said that's the title, she says she never heard it, who does it. I told her Dale Watson and she said who?. I told her, "That's the problem with your station, you don't know what real country music is anymore." She hung up on me. I won't listen to the crap they play. Wish I could have a program and play only "Real Country". That's also the name of my band. God bless and keep promoting the Glasers, super singers.

I am very persistent, my friend. Some might say stubborn. This is my passion these days. I have a new angle in calling any country radio station that still take requests and am trying to get the Glasers on the airways, at least one song at a time. I wrote Peter Cooper of the Nashville Tennessean. He graciously replied and told me he shared the same affinity for these artists. He has left the Tennesean and has taken a job with.....the CMA And The Hall of Fame. This can't hurt! In all fairness Tompall should have gone in in 2013 with Cowboy Jack and Bare. I could go on forever but I will just get worked up and I'm tired. Thank you for the encouragement..

Love this song and the way they sing it.

They wrote it, and the Nebraska farm boys were young and hungry here. This is not as good as the original recording. That was a classic and it is one of those songs that will drive you silly because it will play on repeat in that jukebox in your brain.
