In 2019, she broke the Australian record for the most weeks at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart by any artist with 16 weeks. By mid-January 2020, "Dance Monkey" had spent its 24th and final week at number one, beating Bing Crosby's all-time Australian record for his version of "White Christmas", which spent 22 weeks at the top in 1943.
"Dance Monkey" was accredited 16× platinum by ARIA for shipments of over 1,120,000 units, by mid-2021. Tones was the most awarded artist at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019, winning four of eight nominations. Tones and I released her debut extended play, The Kids Are Coming, on 30 August 2019, which peaked at number three in Australia, and top 10 in several countries. Her debut album, Welcome to the Madhouse, was released via Bad Batch on 16 July 2021. It debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album's lead single "Fly Away" peaked at number four in Australia and number 11 in the UK.
Toni Watson grew up in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula to the south of Melbourne, in the Australian state of Victoria. Conflicting reports state she was born either in 1993 or in 2000. The artist prefers not to disclose her birth details, "I never denied my age. I never lied about it. I just don't say anything now... Everything is wrong online."
She explained choosing a music career: "One day I was at the park with my family, all my cousins and stuff, in Frankston... We were all just singing a song and my aunty was like 'oh guys, she can actually hold a note.' I think that's the earliest memory of someone actually pointing me out as someone that has an ability to sing. I was probably like 7 years old." The singer-songwriter had learned to play keyboards and drum pads while at secondary school. She started busking in Melbourne, while working in fashion retail at the Universal Store.
In 2009, as Toni Watson, she created a YouTube page and posted a cappella cover versions of songs. She performed local gigs and festivals, including the Let Go festival. Tones was the vocalist for a duo in 2014, and remembered: "I started out singing in small pubs and bars in Mornington, I was singing along to a guitarist until I ended up branching out on my own." She explained her shift to a solo career: "I actually got made redundant from my retail job and with that money I bought an RC300 (loop station) and just started to try to figure it all out." She busked "up and down the east coast with her synthesizers and loop pedal, she has been building a loyal fanbase and captivating crowds with her genre-diverse style."
In September 2017, the singer-songwriter travelled to Byron Bay in the Australian state of New South Wales to try busking there. At an early performance, she met Jackson Walkden-Brown who became her manager about a month later. Her busking success led to a greater commitment to a music career. The artist spent 2018 living between Walkden-Brown's home in the Gold Coast hinterland and in her van in Byron Bay, writing music and busking full-time. Later that year she won the Battle of the Buskers at Buskers by the Creek.

I come from the dark but now I see the light
Grindin' all day to elevate my life
it's like a roller coaster but I stay on my flight
I gotta get it right
I come from the dark but now I see the light
Grindin' all day to elevate my life
it's like a roller coaster but I stay on my flight
you not on my level so play your cards right
When I'm in the zone I go day and night
My passion burns bright, I hustle with all my might
I'm finna take me to the top
And look I'm never gonna stop
I'm focused on the time I'm never gonna flop
Gflow go crazy I'm always gonna pop
Let a bitch play with me she finna get cropped
I don't fuck theses niggas cause niggas be opps
I might fuck my girl in my Gucci flip flop
Me n the bros we always on top
Lemme tell you when I do I when be in the booth
I be going crazy shit I go coo
Let a nigga tried me he gon get boom
Theses bitches be dry they had go too
put on my shades I'm boutta know I coo
When it's up it's gets stuck you know I do
I'm bringing the fire I feel like a dragon,
I'm the one in the game no need for u bragging
My bars are tough enough to have you lagging
These niggas be gay why they always sagging
Like Damm this shit is really tragic
Like Damm this shit is so so tragic
Now look I'm nothing like the old me
Look at my last album it got a few streams
Tryin go big and better with this new me
Tryin go big and better with this new me
My flow is like lightning striking with thunderous force
Leaving these niggas in remorse
When I hop on the mic ain't no time for remorse
I spit so much fire the beat always scorched
The beat always scorched
Yeah the beat always scorched
Gflow u fire yeah my dad pass the touch
Haters talk trash stacking with force
im deadass on go so I'm changing the course
I flex on these niggas I can't be ignored
kick down the doors
You know imma score
Fell like Jordan Poole cause he was wiping the floor
My bars are so tough don't even snore
When I put out a song they begging for more
Therefore I gotta keep makin theses songs
Can't wait to explore I wanna going on tour
I'm really at my peak I can't be ignored
But I wanna just get to rackitys
I have to crate a strategy
My flow always switch automatically
I love my family happily
I feel like I'm losing my sanity
Cause Niggas be on dick agony
Imma get to the top passively
I just snap on this beat brutality
I gotta get it right
I come from the dark but now I see the light
Grindin' all day to elevate my life
it's like a roller coaster but I stay on my flight
I'm soaring through the sky, reaching new heights
you not on my level so play your cards right
When I'm in the zone I go day and night
My passion burns bright, I hustle with all my might
The lyrics to Tones and I's song "Take On Me" speaks about a person's willingness to take a chance on love. The opening lines, "Talking away / I don't know what / I'm to say I'll say it anyway / Today's another day to find you / Shying away / I'll be coming for your love, OK," shows how the person is nervously trying to communicate with their love interest but doesn't quite know how to do it. They are aware of the risk of rejection, but they still want to pursue the relationship, indicated in the chorus, "Take on me (Take on me) / Take me on (Take on me) / I'll be gone / In a day or two."
As the lyrics continue, the person admits that they don't have everything together, saying, "So needless to say / Odds and ends / But I'll be stumbling away / Slowly learning that life is OK." They understand that life is not perfect, but they are willing to keep trying, knowing that it's better to take chances rather than play it safe. The second verse shifts to the love interest, who is hesitant to reciprocate, "Oh, things that you say/ Is it live or / Just to play my worries away / You're all the things I've got to remember / You're shying away / I'll be coming for you anyway." It shows that the love interest has some reservations, but the person is still persistent and will try to win them over.
Overall, the lyrics of "Take On Me" are about taking risks and being willing to pursue love, even in the face of uncertainty or rejection. The chorus's repetition drives this message home as the singer repeats, "Take on me / Take me on / I'll be gone in a day or two."
