Trauma
TonyC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Virtually every week there's a study
That more and more people are needing or seeking help for mental health issues
More and more in youth are diagnosed with anxiety
Many more kids are diagnosed
With the whole plethora of childhood conditions such as ADHD
Attention deficite hyperactive disorder
Depression is rising
Youth suicide is rising
Addictions are rising
Genuinely it's an epidemic

And I'm very passionate about it for a simple reason
Because in thirty years or more of medical practice
What I found was that the common template for virtually all afflictions
Mental illness, physical disease is in fact trauma

You're waiting for somebody to scream at you
You're waiting for something to be thrown
You don't know if you're going to eat
You don't know if your going to be evicted
So you're constantly anxious and stressed

I used to think this was a rarity but when I talk to people
A huge number of people have this traumatic experience as a child
That they carry with them
It's like a monkey on your back
When we realize that our traumatic responses and imprints are not ourselves
And that we can work them through
And thus become ourselves

Because it's too painful to be ourselves

And what they do is they disconnect from themselves

When you disconnect from yourself
You no longer have yourself
You lost yourself
When we talk about trauma
We usually think of something terrible happening to a person
But that's not the only trauma there is
And so the other kind of trauma may not have to do with terrible things happening to you
Parents who are so alienated from their own gut feelings
That they will let their infants cry
That's all it takes

During your first eighteen years of life
If a parent or other adult in the household often or very often would swear at you
Insult you, put you down or humiliate you: Step inside the circle
Step inside the circle
Step inside the circle
Mental illness, physical disease is in fact trauma

Fundamentally the message is that with our minds we create the world

So authenticity is not some new age, pseudo spiritual concept
It's actually a survival necessity

Fundamentally the message is that with our minds we create the world

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, TonyC addresses the growing issue of mental health problems and the increasing number of people seeking help for it, especially among the youth. He highlights the rise in diagnoses of conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, depression, and the alarming rates of youth suicide and addiction. TonyC refers to this situation as an epidemic, emphasizing the urgency and importance of addressing mental health.

Drawing from his extensive medical experience, TonyC shares his belief that trauma is a common thread underlying both mental and physical health complications. He suggests that trauma is the template through which many afflictions manifest. This trauma can come from various sources, including experiences of neglect, abuse, or severe stress during childhood. TonyC emphasizes that trauma can have a lasting impact, like a weight carried on one's back, and that it is crucial to recognize and work through these traumatic imprints to become our authentic selves.

TonyC echoes the idea that disconnecting from oneself is a coping mechanism to avoid the pain associated with trauma. However, he warns that this disconnection leads to losing one's true self. He expands the understanding of trauma beyond the traditional view of terrible events happening to a person, explaining that trauma can also arise from emotional neglect and detachment, such as in situations where parents fail to respond to their child's needs.

The lyrics emphasize the power of our minds in shaping our reality. TonyC suggests that in order to create a world that is genuine and true, it is essential to prioritize authenticity. He dismisses the notion that authenticity is a mere new age or spiritual concept, emphasizing that it is a necessary survival tool. By recognizing the impact of trauma and working towards healing and self-acceptance, TonyC suggests that individuals can reclaim their power and create a more authentic and fulfilling existence.
