Back to Back
Tony Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's not the only one
To think that things are going wrong
And all around is only second best.
Time was when all was fair
And we built solid castles in the air
He said that back to back in time's the way to go

Better in my day
I hear everybody say
But then they'll still be saying it tomorrow

It's so hard to take it
When your time is over
Yes it's hard to take it
When you try to remember

Better in my day, in my way, can't you see
Better in my way, here to-day, don't you see

I remember well he said,
When great men led the way instead
Of manicure and media-hugging style
But I don't know what to do
From now on we'll always lose
He said that back to back in time's the way to go

Better in my day
I hear everybody say
But then they'll still be saying it tomorrow

It's so hard to take it
When your time is over
Yes it's hard to take it
When you try to remember

Better in my day, in my way, can't you see
Better in my way, here to-day, don't you see

He's not the only one
To think that things are going wrong
And all around is only second best
But I don't know what to do
From now on we'll always lose
He said that back to back in time's the way to go

The only way to go

Try to remember
Oh better in my day, better in my way.

Overall Meaning

The song "Back to Back" by Tony Banks is a reflection on the passing of time and the constant longing to return to the past. The opening verse talks about a person who is not alone in thinking that things are going wrong and that everything around them is only second best. This person reminisces about a time when everything was fair and people built solid castles in the air. They want to go back to that time and the person suggests that going back to back in time is the way to go. The chorus "better in my day, I hear everybody say, but then they'll still be saying it tomorrow" suggests that while people may think that everything was better in the past, this sentiment is something that never truly goes away and will be felt by future generations as well.

The second verse then begins with a memory of someone who talked about the time when great men led the way instead of manicure and media-hugging style. However, the singer admits to not knowing what to do anymore and that from now on, they'll always lose. The chorus is repeated once again, this time emphasizing the difficulty of accepting that one's time is over, and the longing to return to the past. The song ends with the repetition of "better in my day, better in my way", stressing the idea that the past was better and that the singer wishes they could return to it.

This song would be PERFECT for the next "Back To The Future " movie ,#4 ! (along with Steve Hackett's : "Clocks,(The Angel of Mons)" ) .

Did Tony write all the songs on this album? I like the pic of him on the cover. He was a cutie.πŸ™‚

Banksian Central

He wrote most of them. Musically he wrote it 100%. Lyrically, Fish and Nik Kershaw provided those on two tracks if I remember correctly. Fish for sure wrote the lyrics for "Another Murder of a Day".

Banksian Central

@ksjoyjespeace I think it could fit in there nicely. I doubt it would ever be chosen though unfortunately...If only you or I were in charge of the soundtrack!!

Windy

And are these songs on CD for purchasing or can I find these on the net to add to my in playlist?πŸ™‚
