Firefly
Tony Bennett (Duet with Kermit The Frog) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I call her Firerefly
'Cause, oh, my
She radiates moon glow
Wants none of that noon glow
She starts to glitter
When the sun goes down

'Bout eight p.m., it's mayhem
She switches those brights up
Lights up and gives me a call
Take me to the fireflies ball

But when I get her there
Set her there
Do I get to pet her there
And grab me some glow

No, she's a gad about, mad about
Luring every lad about
While leaving me moaning low

Oh, Firefly, why can't I
Latch onto you no how
Oh, how I love you but gee
While you set the night on
Firefly, shine a little light on me

But when I get her there
Set her there
Do I get to pet her there
And grab me some glow

No, she's a gad about, mad about
Luring every lad about
While leaving me moaning low

Oh, Firefly, why can't I
Latch on for you no how
Oh, how I love you but gee
While you set the night on
Firefly, shine a little light on

Shine a little light on
Shine a little light on me

Overall Meaning

The song Firefly by Tony Bennett is a romantic ballad about a woman who radiates moon glow, referred to as β€˜Firefly’. The song’s narrator is in love with Firefly but is frustrated that he is unable to get her to pay attention to him. Firefly seems to be a wild and free-spirited woman who is more interested in attracting attention from every other man around her than setting her sights on just one. She enjoys going out at night and lighting up the dance floor, but this leaves the singer feeling moaning and frustrated. He pleads with Firefly to give him a chance and shine a little light on him.

The lyrics of Firefly compare the woman to a firefly - a beautiful and elusive creature that lights up the night sky. The metaphor adds to the song’s romantic and whimsical nature. The song’s narrator is clearly infatuated with Firefly and her ability to light up the room. Although he is frustrated that she doesn’t notice him, there is still an underlying feeling of admiration for her free-spirited nature.

Overall, Firefly is a classic romantic ballad that captures the feeling of being in love with someone who is just out of reach. The lyrics are beautiful and the melody is hauntingly beautiful, making it a timeless love song.

I had this 45 RPM when I was about 10 years old and played it on a record player--I don't think it was stereo. I memorized it at that age and was singing it to myself just a few days ago. I also had 45 RPMs of Perry Como's Catch A Falling Star, The Day the Rains Came Down by Jane Morgan, Beep Beep by the Playmates, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Gina, and probably several other Johnny Mathis songs, the Theme from Exodus by Ferrante and Teicher. I played LPs like Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade, Peer Gynt, and the movie soundtracks of Oklahoma and It's Always Fair Weather, and the Broadway cast albums of Annie Get Your Gun and the Sound of Music, which my whole sixth grade class went to New York to see on Broadway with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel in 1960. I had many other albums and 45 RPMs of all genres later but that's what I remember from before 1960.

Thanks for that information about the two versions. Hard to chose between them, both short though the second is really short.

Kind of like the two versions of Boulevard of Broken Dreams. There I like version number two is much better.

@IVORIESMAN

Super track from Mr.Bennett. I presume your copy is the US issue Al. I didn't realise it was released in the UK - on Philips I suppose...

@OldiesAl

YesΒ Joe it's the original US release, the UK version is on Philips must be pretty scarce though as I've never seen one, still on the look out but gave in to the US 45 for now. Tony and Lady Gaga have recorded this on their Cheek To Cheek album. I have tickets to see them as well :)
