With the band Rainbow, Carey appeared on the studio album Rainbow Rising (1976) and on the live albums On Stage (1977) and Live in Germany (1994). Carey performed the keyboard introduction to "Tarot Woman", the first track on the Rainbow Rising album and the keyboard solo on "A Light in the Black", the last cut on the album.
He had a minor hit in the early 1980s with "I Won't Be Home Tonight", and then a bigger hit in 1984 with "A Fine, Fine Day", which reached #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. A follow-up single, "The First Day of Summer", reached #33 on the Hot 100 in July 1984. Both songs are featured on the album, Some Tough City, which hit #60 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Carey opened for Night Ranger on many dates of their 1984 tour in support of this album. His 1985 follow-up album, Blue Highway, did not score a hit.
He also fronted the science-fiction-themed group Planet P Project (initially called just Planet P), which he used as a vehicle for his solo work. Planet P Project released two albums, Planet P (on Geffen Records) in 1983 and Pink World (on MCA Records) in 1984, for which he wrote the lyrics and music, sang the lead vocals, and played most of the instruments. Session performers on lead guitar, saxophones, programming, and drums on some tracks made up the rest of the group. The first album was released on CD in 1992, retitled Planet P Project.
Miles Away

Might have run out long enough
Ad it might have been the curtains on our lives
The way those things were going
And the way the way wind was blowing
How can two people ever survive
Theres a miracle happenig tonight
That im making love to you by candle light
Are miles and miles away
Theres an angel in the room here with us
They will be there when you need them badly enough
And all the darkness hanging over us
Is miles and miles away
We are people and people make mistakes
Stretch it far enough and it might break
Maybe each man carries his own fate in his hands
Theres a miracle happening tonight
Im making love to you by candle light
And all the things that never felt quite right
Are miles and miles away
Theres an angel in the room with us
They will be there if you call them loudly enough
And all the darkness hanging over us is
Miles and miles, miles and miles away
The lyrics of the song "Miles Away" by Tony Carey speak to the power of love and the hope it can bring to a relationship that was once on the brink of collapse. The verse "It might have been the end for us, might have run out long enough, and it might have been the curtains on our lives, the way those things were going and the way the wind was blowing. How can two people ever survive?" sets the stage for a relationship that has faced serious challenges and might not have survived without a miracle. However, the chorus suggests that the couple has found a way to overcome their issues and move forward. The miracles that the singer speaks of are the ability to make love by candlelight and the presence of an angel in the room, which symbolize the hope and positivity that have brought them back from the brink.
The second verse continues this positive theme, with the lyrics "We are people and people make mistakes, stretch it far enough and it might break, maybe each man carries his own fate in his hands." Here, the song acknowledges that relationships are complex and difficult, and that people make mistakes that can lead to their downfall. However, it suggests that if both partners are willing to stretch themselves and work towards fixing their issues, they can overcome these challenges and find a way to make things work.
Overall, "Miles Away" is a hopeful and uplifting song that speaks to the power of love to overcome even the most difficult challenges in life. Its message of hope and positivity is a reminder that, no matter how bad things may seem, there is always a chance to turn them around.
