Didn't we?
This time we almost made some sense of it
Didn't we?
This time I had the answer, right here in my hand
Then I touched it and it had turned to sand
This time we almost sang our song in tune
This time we almost made it, made it to the moon
Didn't we, love?
This time we almost made our poem rhyme
This time we almost made that long hard climb
Didn't we almost make it?
Didn't we almost make it?
Didn't we almost make it this time?
In Tony Christie's song "Didn't We", he describes the feeling of almost achieving something significant. Throughout the lyrics, he reminisces about a time where he and someone else almost made everything work. He reflects on how they almost made the pieces fit, and they almost made some sense of it. He talks about how he had the answer in his hand, but it turned to sand when he touched it. Essentially, he's describing the feeling of coming close to achieving something great, but failing at the last moment.
Christy goes on to describe how they almost sang their song in tune, almost made it to the moon, and almost made their poem rhyme. These lines symbolize the idea that the two people almost succeeded in creating something beautiful together. The repetition of the phrase "Didn't we almost make it?" at the end of each verse emphasizes the disappointment and frustration of falling short after coming so far. The song evokes a sense of nostalgia for a time where everything seemed possible, but ultimately it didn't work out.
Overall, Tony Christie's "Didn't We" is a poignant and reflective meditation on the feeling of almost achieving something great. The song is relatable to anyone who has experienced the disappointment of coming close to achieving their dreams but ultimately falling short.
