Tonya Mitchell is an American pop singer, as well as an aspiring model and actress. She came to fame in 2001 with the release of her debut single, "Broken Promises" from her debut album I Represent, which became a minor hit.
In 1998, Tonya was performing at a regional benefit for St. Jude's Hospital when Justin Timberlake's grandfather, Bill Bomar, was in the audience and heard the young teen sing. Overwhelmed with what he heard, the man approched Tonya and introduced himself. He told Tonya that Justin was his grandson and that maybe he can help her break into the music industry.
At the time, Tonya didn't think anything of it, but it eventually led to her signing with Justin Timberlake's management company, JustinTime Entertainment and being managed by Justin's mother, Lynn Harless. Tonya was later then signed to Universal Records and entered the studio to record her twelve-song debut album.
On February 27, 2001, after a few weeks of recording the album, Mitchell's first single, Broken Promises, an up-beat track produced by Brian Kieruff and Josh Schwartz, hit radio. The song reached #36 on Radio & Records' CHR/Pop tracks chart and peaked at #17 on the ARC Weekly Top 40 in late April. Following the successful release of the single, Mitchell released her debut solo album, I Represent, on April 10, 2001.
In 2001, Tonya was asked to be one of the opening acts for the NSYNC Pop Odyssey Tour. This took Tonya's career to a higher level by making appearances at venues and performing in front of audiences of 50,000+
On November 12, 2001, Tonya was dropped from Universal Records. Soon to follow, in early 2002, the record companies stopped returning calls and emails from Mitchell's management. Tonya's father, Cowboy Louie Mitchell, decided to take it upon himself to help his daughter get back into the public eye once more and get her signed again. He died in July 2001.
In August 2005, Tonya signed with her new management company, Brand-On Entertainment. She started recording a month later. Along with BAD GIRL, Mitchell has also released Shy Role, Sometimey Friend, Miss It, Blah Blah Blah and "Yes I Will" as well as recording a jingle for Monster Energy drink. In late 2007, Tonya was no longer signed to a management company.
In Fall of 2008 Tonya announced that she is no longer actively pursuing a music career.

Baby, that's just what you told me
(That's what you said)
But you're nowhere to be found
Something just ain't right
'Cause I can't get you to hold me
Even when you're around
That you'd always be there for me
(Tell me) Tell me what's on your mind
(Tell me what's on your mind)
What happened to the "I Love You"s
The hugs and kisses and the rendezvous'
What happened to me and you
You said you'd never change
What happened
Baby, talk to me
You used to be sugar sweet
Just like candy
Now you're breaking my heart
With all your broken promises
Open up your eyes
Baby that's what people tell me
(That's what they say)
But it's hard to let you go
I can't take your lies
If you're spending time with somebody else
You gotta let me know
Baby you promised me
That you'd never run a game on me
(Tell me) Tell me what's on your mind
What happened to the "I Love You"s
The hugs and kisses and the rendezvous'
What happened to me and you
You said you'd never change
What happened
Baby, talk to me
You used to be sugar sweet
Just like candy
Now you're breaking my heart
With all your broken promises
You say you're gonna do this
And you say you're gonna do that
But you never come through
(But you never come through)
And it's so different lately
'Cause you don't call me baby
I just don't know what to do
(I just don't know what to do)
What happened to the "I Love You"s
The hugs and kisses and the rendezvous'
What happened to me and you
You said you'd never change
What happened
Baby, talk to me
You used to be sugar sweet
Just like candy
Now you're breaking my heart
With all your broken promises
You say you're gonna do this
And you say you're gonna do that
Oh what happened to me and you
You said you'd never change
Baby baby tell me
What happened
Baby, talk to me
You used to be sugar sweet
Just like candy
Now you're breaking my heart
With all your broken promises
So quit breaking my heart
With all your broken promises
In this song, Tonya Mitchell sings about a lover who has broken their promises of love and commitment. The song is about the pain and confusion that Mitchell feels over the broken promises made by her lover. She starts off by stating that her lover promised her that there would be no more lonely nights for her and that he would always be there for her. However, she feels lost and alone because he is nowhere to be found. Mitchell goes on to say that her lover used to be sweet as candy and promised her he'd never run a game on her. She is confused about what has changed and why he is breaking all of his promises. She wonders about what happened to the "I Love You"s, the hugs and kisses, and the rendezvouses they used to have together.
She confronts him and asks him to be honest with her about what's going on, and says that she can't take his lies anymore. She feels like their relationship is falling apart, and she desperately wants him to talk to her. Mitchell closes out the song by urging him to stop breaking her heart with all his broken promises.

I remember her. Met her in Orlando. She was managed by Justin Timberlake's mom. My ex was her backup dancer. She was a great singer but I remember them saying she was a little too immature at the time. She would constantly be on her cell phone at meet and greets, ignoring her fans. Clearly, that didn't work out for her. It's a shame cause she had a lot of potential.

Singer Dino co-wrote and produced this song. Dino had a few hits in the late 80's and early 90's with "Summergirls", "I Like it" and "Romeo". He also co-wrote and produced the jam "Watch Me Shine" from the "Legally Blonde" soundtrack around the same time as this song in 2001.

I learned about this out of curiousity in 2002. It was wrongly tagged as Mandy Moore's song in Limewire. 🤣
