Reflection
Tool尀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have come curiously close to the end, down
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole
Defeated, I concede and
Move closer
I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness
How pitiful
It's calling me
It's calling me
It's calling me
It's calling me

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping
The moon tells me a secret, my confidant
As full and bright as I am
This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me

Its source is bright and endless
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting

And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt
Don't want to be down here feeding my narcissism
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out
Before I pine away
Before I pine away
Before I pine away
Before I pine away

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable
Just let the light touch you
And let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason

Before we pine away (pine away)
Before we pine away (pine away)

Before we pine away (pine away)
Before we pine away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tool's song Reflection reflect the singer’s emotional journey, as he confesses a deep sadness and a sense of hopelessness. He admits to being lost and defeated, resigning himself to being trapped in a self-inflicted hole. However, he also writes of an inner voice calling him to come closer, to find comfort and peace within the emptiness. In his darkest moment, he turns to the moon, which reveals to him that he is part of something much larger than himself, a collective consciousness that stretches across space and time. The singer begs for the light to lift him out of his current situation, vowing to crucify his ego before it is too late. He acknowledges that he needs to leave behind his negative and cynical outlook, because all human beings are capable of creating great things if we let the light touch us and allow our words and hopes to pass through us.

The message conveyed in this song is a powerful one, as it speaks to the universal human experience of feeling lost, hopeless, and alone. The singer emphasizes the importance of reaching out to something beyond ourselves for guidance, whether it be the moon or a higher power. The references to light and the concept of a collective consciousness suggest that there is a greater purpose to our existence, and that we are all connected in some way. The last lines are particularly poignant, as they implore the listener to find hope and reason before it is too late.

Reflection by Christina Aguilera.
Look at me
You may think you see
Who I really am
But you'll never know me
Every day
It's as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
I am now
In a world where I
Have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow
I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?
Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
There's a heart that must be
Free to fly
That burns with a need to know
The reason why
Why must we all conceal
What we think, how we feel?
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?
I won't pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

Letting this song stay with Christina is the best decision Disney has made in a long time. Thank you.

@adamplunkett9589

You are so right

Could not agree more

@BabyPinkHeart

Dissaagree. It will be nice to see a new interpretation by a different singer. If it’s not great, then there’s always the original pop version to get back to. People tend to think a new version ruins the old version but it will never go away. I personally prefer the original movie version by Lea Salonga and Christina’s original pop version

@GETOSUPASTAR

Agreed. Nobody else coulda sang this but Chrissy. NOBODY!

@ahbin1984rodan

After 22 years, the song also matured! 😍

This gift that Disney is giving us is huge, bringing Christina back to sing Reflection. NO ONE could have replaced her.

@sanjaykumartripathi8597

Definitely

@Yumiiyumi-

Not hating on Christina but no one will replace Lea Salonga

@ryanwilson5162

@@Yumiiyumi- Of course. Lea is Lea, and I love her.
