Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.

Siete mares he surcado, siete mares color azul,
yo soy nave, voy navegando, y mi vela eres tú...
a Saturno, después a Marte, nadie sabe dónde llegará,
The lyrics of Toquinho's song "Acuarela" are filled with vivid imagery and heartfelt emotions, inviting listeners to embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration of the world around them. The opening lines set the tone by describing the sun as always yellow in the sky maps, emphasizing its unyielding brightness that cannot be obscured by rain or clouds. This imagery serves as a metaphor for the clarity and guidance that light provides on our path towards the depths of our destiny, symbolized by a lush green forest waiting to be explored.
The mention of navigating seven blue seas and being a ship with "you" as the sail evokes a sense of companionship and reliance on a loved one for direction and support. The underwater world of colorful fish moving freely reflects a sense of freedom and autonomy, contrasting with the structured hierarchy observed in the sky where an airplane flies high above, detached from earthly concerns and destination unknown. The fleeting nature of encounters and departures is highlighted as the plane fades into the distance, leaving behind a sense of mystery and possibility.
The lyrics shift to a train journey through enchanting landscapes, bridging the gap between continents in a fleeting moment, underscoring the idea that exploration and discovery are within reach for those who dare to dream. The vision of a boy climbing a wall, visualizing a clear future ahead, mirrors the theme of perseverance and foresight leading to new horizons and adventures. The mention of a future as a spaceship soaring through the skies to unknown destinations conveys a sense of endless possibilities and the importance of seizing opportunities before they vanish.
The overarching message of the song suggests that hope should never be lost, even in challenging times, as the future is likened to a watercolor painting waiting to be filled with vibrant hues on the canvas of life. The repeated refrain "tú lo pintarás" (you will paint it) serves as a powerful reminder of personal agency and the ability to shape one's own destiny through thoughts, actions, and intentions. Ultimately, "Acuarela" invites listeners to embrace the uncertainty of the future, cherish the present moment, and paint their own colorful experiences on the blank canvas of life.
