Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.

Eu quero a graça de deus
Em segundo lugar
Quero saúde, que deus me ajude
Em terceiro, eu quero dinheiro
Em quarto lugar quero a mulher
E o resto, seja o que deus quiser
E o resto, seja o que deus quiser
Em preces eu solicito
As graças do infinito
Desejo, sim, tudo de bom para mim
Viver e sonhar
Sorrir e cantar
Sem blasfemar
Num sofrimento qualquer
Mas o mundo é tão bom
Com saúde, dinheiro e mulher
Em primeiro lugar
Eu quero a graça de deus
Em segundo lugar
Quero saúde, que deus me ajude
Em terceiro, eu quero dinheiro
Em quarto lugar quero a mulher
E o resto, seja o que deus quiser
E o resto, seja o que deus quiser
Toquinho's song "Em Primeiro Lugar" is all about what one desires the most in life. The song's title means "In First Place" in English, and the song is a prayer of sorts. The lyrics state that first and foremost, one wants the grace of God, followed by good health with divine assistance. After those priorities come money and then a woman. The final lines of the song suggest a sense of surrender and acceptance, "E o resto, seja o que deus quiser," which translates to "And the rest, let it be what God wants." The song is essentially a reminder that while we can hope for certain things in life, ultimately, we have little control over what will come our way.
The lyrics are reflective of Brazil's cultural and religious values, as the country is predominantly Catholic. The song's themes of faith, health, wealth, and love are all areas in which people frequently seek guidance from a higher power. The song also highlights the importance of letting go of one's desires and submitting to God's will.
