Butterfly
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stinky soul get a little lost in my own
Hey General, need a little love in that hole of yours
One ways, now, and Saturdays and our kittens all wrapped in cement
From cradle to gundrops
Got me running girl fast as I can
And is it right Butterfly they like you better framed and dried

Daddy dear if I can kill one man why not two
Well, nurses smile when you got iron veins
You can't stain their pretty shoes and pom poms and cherry blondes
And their kittens still wrapped in cement
From God's saviors to gundrops
Got me running girl as fast as I can
And is it right Butterfly they like you better framed and dried

Got a pretty pretty garden pretty garden yes

Got me a pretty pretty garden a pretty garden yes
Got me a pretty pretty garden a pretty garden

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tori Amos's song "Butterfly" are cryptic and can be interpreted in several different ways. The song presents snippets of disconnected thoughts, which creates a stream of consciousness effect. The lines "Stinky soul get a little lost in my own" and "Hey General, need a little love in that hole of yours" may suggest a feeling of being lost and disconnected from oneself. The line "One ways, now, and Saturdays and our kittens all wrapped in cement" possibly refers to a feeling of being trapped or stuck, perhaps in a dead-end job or relationship. The line "From cradle to gundrops" suggests a life-long journey and the inevitability of death.

The subsequent lines "Got me running girl fast as I can" and "And is it right Butterfly they like you better framed and dried" may express a feeling of being chased or pursued, possibly by a critical or oppressive force. The lines "Daddy dear if I can kill one man why not two" appear to imply a sense of anger and aggression, while the lines "Well, nurses smile when you got iron veins / You can't stain their pretty shoes and pom poms and cherry blondes / And their kittens still wrapped in cement / From God's saviors to gundrops" could suggest disillusionment with societal expectations and ideals.

The repetition of the phrase "Got me a pretty pretty garden" at the end of the song may indicate a desire for a peaceful and idyllic existence, a retreat from the chaos and turmoil of the world.

again sorry about that.

Just wanted to say I think I'd prefer to hear this live more than any other b-sides... I'm getting old though, watch me look up the tour history and I find that I actually saw a rendition of her playing at live at the Beacon Theater or something...

since we ARE commenting on this track. let me also say I can never get enough of this track. a rarity for me that I've not only endured but enjoyed hearing this on repeat. literally on a loop. both ln my stereo. cd turntable... and on music match, napster, winamp... lol this takes me back.

then my ipod video (the red U2 one) on my mac's iTunes and then finally here on YouTube.

slideshows rub me the wrong way, but I cant get enough of that guitar tone on Steve's funky chords at the end

I love when he gets all funkified like he was on tour with Bowie or something.

Precious things, cornflake girl and even something from.venus and back comes to mind

do you have any favorite caton memories
? when he used to play guitar with her practically every show and album from the start until 2000 I think? or am I wrong about that?

I dont think it was until I 2007 with her bitch posse ,(what a tour that was too!!) that she finally appeared with a replacement guitarist (I realize her husband had been filling in for more than a minute on the recordings)

I wonder what happened.

dont we all love to imagine juicy gossip? amicable splits are most likely the norm but it's fun to fantasize about tantrums and firings. name-calling and public shaming innit?

Higher Learning!! R.I.P. John Singleton. I love Tori Amos 😍. She is so underrated, and unappreciated. But we love her. We know true art.

I heard this in Higher Learning and I found it to be amazing. Really fit the mood of the scene it was played in. I think the movie is one EVERYONE NEEDS to watch. It's a real eye opener.

oddly? (weirdly??)I agree. totally. everyone flips their wig over Siren, and I've even got to see/hear her do that live in person too-- but I've always been partial to this and Merman (which I also caught live- at a secret time: the two solo songs she delivered nightly, serving as a break between the electric full band sets during her 98/99 plugged tour... though if I recall correctly, Merman was actually performed at MSG in NYC. A tasty sold out event that served up a savant at the peak of her magical creative and performance prowess, coincidentally my first ever tori show.)

pardon my ramble.

but just saying, does she ever perform this live? I love it and woild

First heard this in 98 and there's not many songs that can beat this one still. Absolute classic. The emotion in her voice and that assault on our heartstrings via piano...Framed and dried.

This has long been one of my favorite songs. The piano and vocals keep sort of drifting up and down, from sounding serene to sounding like there's a bit of a storm drifting, the song really just looks like a butterfly flying in and out of a rainstorm. It's just perfect.

Came because of higher learning. That was the first movie I seen with my high school sweetheart as a first date. This was our song from the soundtrack. Every time I hear this song I think about her and the good times we had together. Last week she died. Miss you Nicole. I’ll never forget you. Xxoo
