Fire to Your Plain
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shock, got the shock of my life
Just buckle up girls, I'm stealin' the night
From the still of the night
What they're down to
Let's see, in cold daylight

I gotta get this right
I gotta get this right

Cause she's all
And I am low
Watching you watching her play this game
Yes, she's bold
Bold enough
To set fire to your plain
Her fire to your plain

Pray
You can pray to your Jane
I put out the call
But not to be saved
Called my deviling kin
With her yellow Aston Martin

We gotta get this right
I gotta get this right

Cause she's all
And I am low
Watching him watching her play this game
Yes, she's bold
Bold enough
To set fire to his plain

She said, "get in"
And set the SatNav to hell
Or would it be a purgatory?

I gotta get this right
I gotta get this right

Cause she's all
And I am low
Watching you watching her play this game
Yes, she's bold
Bold enough
To set fire to your plain
Her fire to your plain

Her fire...

Bold enough...
Her fire to your plain

Overall Meaning

Tori Amos's song "Fire to Your Plain" is a song about jealousy, anger and revenge. The lyrics detail the singer's feelings towards someone who stole their romantic partner away from them. The song starts off with the singer expressing shock at the situation and deciding to take action. They plan to steal the night and confront the situation head-on. The imagery used in the song is dark and violent, with the singer comparing themselves to a devil and planning to "set the SatNav to hell."

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "she's all and I am low" and "watching you watching her play this game," which highlights the singer's feelings of jealousy and helplessness. The use of the phrase "play this game" suggests that the singer sees the situation as a game that someone is winning at their expense. The singer also acknowledges the other person's boldness in the situation, which seems to be a source of frustration for them.

Overall, the song is a tense and emotional expression of the singer's anger and pain. The lyrics suggest that the singer is planning to take drastic and potentially destructive action to address the situation.

Just as a point of interest, at 1:33 Tori is driving my 73 Delta 88 that I inherited from my Dad. The camera man and I are in the back seat, as I'm giving directions on how to get around the French Quarter. The photo hanging from the rear view mirror is my Dad, posing with his new car in his full dress Navy uniform. Tori was very sweet and it was a very pleasant afternoon. It was a pleasure meeting her. Sorry about the burned out parking light, I didn't realize it until I saw the video.

One of my fav albums. I remember many “fans” complaining about it, but I thought that it was awesome and a masterpiece. Such a shame it was not so well promoted.
