Rex's Blues
Townes Van Zandt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery
Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be

If I had a nickel I'd find a game
If I won a dollar I'd make it rain
If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
And lay me down dissatisfied

Legs to walk and thoughts to fly
Eyes to laugh and lips to cry
A restless tongue to classify
All born to grow and grown to die

So tell my baby I said so long
Tell my mother I did no wrong
Tell my brother to watch his own
And tell my friends to mourn me none

I'm chained upon the face of time
Feelin' full of foolish rhyme
There ain't no dark till something shines
I'm bound to leave this dark behind

Ride the blue wind high and free
She'll lead you down through misery

Leave you low, come time to go
Alone and low as low can be

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Rex's Blues paint a picture of the open road and a sense of freedom, but also a warning of the potential pitfalls that come with it. The "blue wind" represents this freedom and excitement, but it also leads "down through misery," emphasizing the melancholic nature of Van Zandt's music. The following lines express a feeling of dissatisfaction and restlessness, as though the singer is constantly searching for something that they can never quite find. The imagery of rain and ocean further emphasizes this sense of unfulfillment.

The second verse delves deeper into the human experience, highlighting the contradictions and complexities of life. The singer acknowledges that they have the ability to walk and think, to experience both joy and sadness, and to communicate in a way that is unique to humans. However, with this comes the realization that all humans are destined to die, no matter how much we may strive to avoid it.

The final verses of the song focus on the inevitability of time and the singer's acceptance that they are chained to it. Despite this, there is a sense of optimism in the final lines, as the singer is "bound to leave this dark behind." The final repetition of the opening lines reinforces the hope for freedom, despite the melancholy and pain that come with it.

This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. I love it , but I can only let myself experience it once in a while. I get too emotional. Truly, this song touches a nerve I never knew I had.

So so so beautiful. Like so many of us he never could leave the dark behind. The greatest there ever was.

Agree that this is the best version. I can't imagine what that show was like at the Old Quarter that night. He was really on top of his game.

Just finished his biography and had to smile seeing this album cover. The picture was picked without his permission. He was really upset upon seeing it because he said his mother wouldn't be happy to see he had no shirt on - she'd think it disrespectful.
