Pure & Easy
Townshend Pete Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There once was a note pure and easy
Playing so free like a breathe rippling by
The note is eternal
I hear it, it sees me
Forever we blend as forever we die

I listened and I heard music in a word
And words when you played your guitar
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering
And a child flew past me riding in a star

As people a**emble
civilization is trying to find a new way to die
But killing is really merely scene changer
All men are bored with other men's lives

I listened and I heard music in a word
And words when you played your guitar
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering
And a child flew past me riding in a star

Gas on the hillside
Oil in the tea cup
Watch all the chords of life lose their joy
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness
The note that began all can also destroy

We all know success when we all find our own dream
And our love is enough to knock down any wall
And the future's been seen as men try to realize
The simple secret of the note in us all
In us all

I listened and I heard music in a word
And words when you played your guitar
The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering
And a child flew past me riding in a star

Today is the day the sound curdles mountains
Flowing and blowing each man in its wake
Destroying itself in the end with vibration
There's nothing on earth it's challenge can take
Excepting one note

Excepting one note pure and easy
Playing so free like breath rippling by

Excepting one note
Excepting one note
Excepting one note, pure and easy
Excepting one note, pure and easy
(repeated)

There once was a note listen
There once was a note listen

There once was a note listen
There once was a note listen

Overall Meaning

The song starts with the idea of a pure and easy note – a sound that is eternal and timeless. The note represents a pure idea or essence that is undisturbed by human civilization and a society that is looking for a new way to die. Despite the chaos and confusion of our world, the never-ending note is peaceful and it merges with us as we live and eventually die. The music and words we hear are a reflection of the note and how it brings people together to create and express themselves. The note is universal and can connect all people regardless of their backgrounds.

The second verse introduces the idea of success, love, and the search for the meaning of life. The note is the key to success and happiness in life, and once we find our own dream, we can break down any wall that stands in our way. The future can be seen once we begin to understand the importance of the note to each person. The third verse talks about the chaos and destruction that can come from the note when it is distorted or taken out of context. The only true note is the pure and easy one – something that is hard to find these days.

Salut be with you Pete,

I've been exploring for nearly 30 years, how to cultivate Care's Health Vitality, after discovering by accident the pure and easy breath that feels so free.

I've come the call it My personal War on Kinks. My battles are to I gradually defeat all kinks by increasing my acquisition of the taste for health, provided freely by Life's Spirit.

The aim of my quest, which is the life long process, is to arrive at the point that when I breath in, my skin breaths out and when I breath out my skin breath in, freely with no anomalies.

This breathing process is already what our bodies aims to do naturally, but it is disrupted with constant interruptions and disturbances that ends up manufacturing kinks across our whole person, physical and otherwise.

The goal of cultivating Care's Health Vitality this way, is to reach the day when my breathing is no longer interrupted by stress or any
by any other unhealthy influence.

I do so by training my breath to softly and gradually increase my awareness of life's force while I breath in and increase my awareness of death while I breath out, aiming to settle in balance of both increasingly deeper.

The benefit of the exercise is that it drives me into the weakness from which grace feeds Spirit's strength.

During the last few days, I have entered a new level that has taken me through the zig zag's waving of the face/head's energy.

This zig zag energy production waves from the note feeling so free like a breath rippling by to play songs of its own Now, and it has to do with the asymmetry of the whole body receiving and responding in the serene music of Life's Spirit.

In the meditative exercise that I practice, the line under the tongue determines where my attention can begin to grasp the energy wave by gently rolling the tongue while settling the breath.

Once aware of the settling, the nose is where I engage my attention with the zig zag's waving.

To avoid confusion with my description, I follow the trajectory of breath/energy from left nostril to the right eye's blink motion that guides to the left back of the head from where I give attention to TMJ's relaxing while the subtle energy waves its way to engage from the right nostril to receive and to respond to the lead that carries the perpetual movement of the energy's subtle zig zag from left to right to left to right...

This makes me feel wonders that I just don't have words for. SO blessed to have grown up during the days when THIS music was being made.

Totally agree. And another point to consider: although we are accustomed to Roger singing this, because it was written by Pete, it still sounds great when Townshend sings it. The phrase, "He owned this song" applies here.

So true and well said, this generation and the ones buffering right around it were the purest, beautiful most rock n' roll days that ever put out a note to listen, with regards to this beautiful example, never knew how quadrophenic Pete Townsend was till I found his solo career 🎶, the man sure did 'give blood' for music 🎶!
