Für Elise
Traffic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

üks maja laguneb üksilduses
Vanad aknad ja uks on vildakas ees
Laual päevikust rebitud read
Pimedamat ööd pole näinud eal
Tagatoas närtsind lillega vaas
Lahtinööbitud kleit on voodi ees maas
Tüdruk teki all liikumatu
Kapiuksed on hingedelt maas
Seisab kell vaid tuhk on kaminas

Eliisele

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Traffic's song "Für Elise" paint a desolate and lonely picture of a dilapidated house with old windows and doors that are crooked and weathered. There are torn pages from a journal lying on the table, and a wilted vase of flowers in the back room. The girl in the story is lying motionless under a blanket, hoping to be rescued. The singer wishes that the walls could speak, as they would have many stories to tell. However, the only voice he hears is that of Elise, haunting him in his thoughts.

As the lyrics progress, the singer reminisces about the past, where there were no worries and everything was carefree. There were beautiful moments that brought them together, but those were now just memories as the jewellery had tarnished with no one to adorn them. The clock no longer ticked and the only sound was that of the wolves howling in the night.

Throughout the song, the singer yearns for the voice of Elise to bring him beautiful words from across the water that he can then respond to. The song is a poignant and melancholic reflection on love lost and the overwhelming sense of loneliness that can come with it.

If you want to understand what they sing about:
0:33 - If these walls could talk they'd recite so many stories
0:40 Elise hääl - Elise's voice
Kõlab ainult minu mõtetes - I can only hear in my thoughts
Nii iga päev aina loodan, et rutates - Like this every day i hope, only in hurry
kaunid sõnad suult minuni võiks tuul tuua hommikul - (i wish) the morning wind could bring beautiful words to me
ja siis vastuse saadan (üle vee) oma armsale - and/so then i could send a reply to my love
Eliisele - For Elise

''üle vee'' is little like an old saying and and word to word it means ''over the water''

wait what

I'm Estonian, I can speak Estonian, I tried translating the lyrics into English, hERE YOU GO

A house is decaying in loneliness
Old windows and door are lopsided in front
A diary's ripped rows on the table
A darker night hasn't been seen ever
At the back room, a vase with a withered flower
A buttoned-open dress in front of the bed on the ground
Girl under the blanket, motionless
Hopes to be saved

If these walls could talk, they'd speak a couple stories

Eliise's voice can be heard only in my thoughts
So that everyday I keep hoping, that by rushing
The wind would bring beautiful words from mouth to me in the morning
And then I'd send an answer over the water to my love, Eliise

In the mirror, the passed time flickers
There were no worries and when there was a lack of troubles
Beautiful moments which linked us
When the jewellery is ashy because nobody wears them
The cupboard doors are on the ground from the hinges
The clock stands, there is only ashes in the fireplace
Over the night, the wolves' voices can be heard
And then everything gets so quiet

Eliise's voice can be heard only in my thoughts
So that everyday I keep hoping, that by rushing
The wind would bring beautiful words from mouth to me in the morning
And then I'd send an answer over the water to my love, Eliise

(bridge of the song)

Eliise's voice can be heard only in my thoughts
So that everyday I keep hoping, that by rushing
The wind would bring beautiful words from mouth to me in the morning
And then I'd send an answer over the water to my love, Eliise

Очень хорошая песня!Одна из лучших групп Эстонии наравне с Эверт и драконы.
Удачи в дальнейшем творчестве!

Ohh! Just heard about their entry for Eesti Laul. Didn't know anything! I'm really happy for them and I hope they're chosen to represent Estonia at Eurovision. Come on! They deserve it!

@*****
Well, I don't know him personally but I've heard his songs with his other band, Outloudz, and all are beautiful. So he seems to be, at least, very creative! Check out the videos of The only sound, Wide Awake or I wanna meet Bob Dylan. Besides, all the songs are in english :oD

Wow! I just discovered this great song today. How could you NOT send this one to eurovision? This would've made top 10 in my opinion.. It would have meant serious competition to our common linnets!
Greetings from the Netherlands :)
