Dream On
Train Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines in my face gettin' clearer
The past is gone;
It went by like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way?
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay

I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin;
You got to lose to know how to win.

Half my life's in books' written pages,
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know it's true,
All the feelings
Come back to you.

Sing with me,
Sing for the year,
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear.
Sing it with me
If it's just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away.

(aaaaaaaaa...)

Sing with me,
Sing for the year,
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear.
Sing it with me
If it's just for today,
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away.

(come on )

Dream on, dream on, dream on,
Dream yourself a dream come true.
Dream on, dream on, dream on,
Dream until your dream comes true.

Dream on, Dream on, Dream on,
Dream, Dream ,Dream come true

Dream on, Dream on, Dream on, Dream on
Dream on, Dream on, Dream on (aaa...)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Train's song Dream On are filled with themes of personal reflection, overcoming adversity, and holding onto hope. The opening lines "Every time that I look in the mirror, all these lines in my face getting clearer" suggest that the singer is aging and becoming more aware of their mortality. They acknowledge that they cannot change the past but must continue to move forward. The lines "I know it's everybody's sin; you got to lose to know how to win" emphasizes the importance of making mistakes and learning from them.

The second verse, "Half my life's in books written pages, live and learn from fools and from sages", urges the listener to seek knowledge from both the foolish and wise. It is important to learn from others to set you on a path to success. The lyrics seem to suggest that all of our experiences- the good, bad, and ugly- contribute to who we are today and that we should embrace them.

The chorus of the song serves as a call to action to the listener. Singing for the year, for the laughter and the tears, reminds us to live in the present and cherish our experiences, both good and bad. The final lines "Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away" is a reminder that time is of the essence and that we must make the most out of our lives.

The song as a whole can be interpreted as an anthem of resilience and hope in the face of adversity. Life is not always kind, but it is important to continue to dream and pursue what makes us happy.

I remember seeing this event as well. Aerosmith gave them a standing ovation. I believe Steven later said he had never heard anyone do it as well as Train did. It was a phenomenal performance to me.

I'm one of the Indian musicians in the very very back playing a tanpura (drone). It was really fun to be up there with Train during such a big crazy MTV production!

Ya existía Train en 2002??? Muy buena interpretación de la canción de los genios de Aerosmith!!

Keegan vs. Fish

That's probably the best performance I have seen of "Dream On" besides Aerosmith's which is (and will always be) the best.
