The band released their debut album, Good Feeling (1997), to moderate success where it debuted at number nine on the UK Albums Chart and was later awarded a silver certification from the BPI in January 2000. The band gained greater success with their second album, The Man Who (1999), which spent nine weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, totalling 134 weeks in the top 100 of the chart. In 2003, The Man Who was certified 9× platinum by the BPI, representing sales of over 2.68 million in the UK alone. Following this success, the band released their third effort, The Invisible Band (2001) album. The Invisible Band went on to match the success found with their previous album, where it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and spent a total of four weeks at the top spot, fifteen weeks in the top ten, and a total of fifty-five weeks in the top 100 chart, as well as peaking at thirty-nine on the US Billboard 200 album chart, spending a duration of seven weeks in the Billboard 200 chart. A year following the release of The Invisible Band, the BPI awarded Travis with a 4× platinum certification for the album.
In recent years, the band's discography has included studio albums 12 Memories (2003), The Boy with No Name (2007), Ode to J. Smith (2008), Where You Stand (2013), Everything at Once (2016) and 10 Songs (2020). In 2004, the band released their first greatest hits album, Singles, which spent nineteen weeks in the top 100 of the UK albums chart. Travis have twice been awarded best band at the BRIT Awards and were awarded the NME Artist of the Year award at their 2000 ceremony, and in 2016 were honoured at the Scottish Music Awards for their outstanding contribution to music. The band are widely said by the media to have paved the way for other bands such as Keane and Coldplay to go on to achieve worldwide success throughout the 2000s, particularly with the success of The Man Who.
Craft Recordings celebrated the 20th anniversary of Travis' breakthrough year with two simultaneous releases: Live at Glastonbury '99, plus expanded editions of The Man Who – both of which were released on 21 June 2019.
Outer in space

We have spent
So much time looking for someone to blame
'Cause we're the same
And jealous games
Take up time we could spend on other things
Oh my friend
Let us go and then not look back again
We can't be
You and me
Taking ourselves much too seriously
But out in space
A million miners work upon the nights coal face
And all I see is black
And the stars look back at me
Oh my friend
What a friend
I'd have thought you'd have stayed here till the end
To take a bow
Draw the crowd
We're just words in the sand at high tide
But out in space
A million miners work upon the nights coal face
And all I see is black
And all the stars look back at me
Oh my friend
We should spend
Some more time looking from the other end
'Cause we would see
So clearly
We blame ourselves as much as we blame we
We blame ourselves as much as we blame we
We blame ourselves
The song "Outer in Space" by Travis explores the theme of self-reflection and how we tend to blame others instead of focusing on fixing our own shortcomings. The song begins with the singer addressing a friend with whom they have spent a lot of time playing the blame game. The singer acknowledges that both of them are the same and that they should stop taking themselves too seriously. The lyrics suggest that the friendship may be ending, but the singer urges the friend to not look back and move on.
The chorus of the song takes a different turn and talks about outer space. The singer describes how a million miners work on the nights coal face, and all they can see is black. The stars look back at the singer, which may suggest that even in the vastness of space, we are not alone. The lyrics have a sense of awe and wonder and may indicate that looking at the bigger picture (outer space) can offer a new perspective on life.
The song's second verse emphasizes the importance of looking at things from a different perspective. The singer suggests that they should spend more time looking from the other end and that they would see things more clearly. The last line of the song ("We blame ourselves") is repeated multiple times, which may imply that we tend to be our harshest critics and that we should take responsibility for our actions.
Overall, "Outer in Space" is a reflective song that encourages the listener to take a step back and look at things from a different perspective. The song's focus on outer space may suggest that problems that may seem significant to us are relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

What a friend
Exclaiming how remarkable the friendship is
I'd have thought you'd have stayed here till the end

We're just words in the sand at high tide
We are just temporary and cannot fight against the circumstances
We should spend
We should use our time
Some more time looking from the other end
We should view from the other point of view
'Cause we would see
This will enable us to see

We condemn ourselves as we also criticize each other
