We're Rich On What We've Got
Triumvirat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your fifteen hundred bucks-a-month apartment
Is paid for by a numbered bank account
You don't care where it's coming from
To you it does come easy
And a new financé always can be found
Wasting time on those meaningless possessions
Always longing for the things that you have not
You can try and try again
Your ambitions are in vain
When you should have known
You're rich on what you've got
For years you've been an excellent pretender
The virgin in your smile is not for real
But what kills you is the difference
between the life you're leading
And the worry of exactly what you feel
Close your eyes and take a look at your depression
And the artificial things you do for love
When you try and try again
Your intentions might be vain
But the effort sure would help a lot
For you to see
We're rich on what we've got
Oh we're rich on what we've got
You don't care about a thing you own
To you they do come easy
But with all you have
You are still alone
Wasting time on those meaningless possessions
Running after what you're never going to need
Here you go and try again
Will you hunger ever come to an end
When you go through all the junk you've got
You'll find you really haven't got a lot
Close your eyes, take a look at your depression
And the artificial things you love so much
When you try and try again
Your ambition might be vain
But the effort sure would help a lot

For you to see
We're rich on what we've got

Overall Meaning

The song 'We're Rich on What We've Got' by Triumvirat, is a commentary on the human tendency to constantly aspire to attain more, overlooking and undermining the value of what we possess in the present. The lyrics describe a character who is seemingly affluent, living in a luxurious apartment with a monthly rent of $1500, which is being paid for by a numbered bank account (implying that the source of income may not be entirely legitimate, but the character does not care). The character is portrayed as someone who does not care about their wealth, but is consumed by the desire for more, and always seeking a new fiancé or partner to fulfill their needs.

The second verse highlights the character's deceptive nature, the virgin smile they wear, and the discrepancy between the life they lead and their real emotions. The chorus of the song emphasizes the message that we are 'rich on what we have', and that focusing on our possessions, and continually striving for more, will only lead to a sense of emptiness and loneliness. In the third verse, the lyrics are structured as a sort of warning or advice to the character, and urge them to recognize the superficiality of their desires and to appreciate what they already have.

A rich man met a carpenter
Their minds were world's apart
The rich man said 'How do you do
Could you frame my golden heart?'
'I don't think I could do that job
I don't have the magic touch
You better go find a jeweler's store
Where they do frame things as such'

What do I do
Am I left behind
I'm not asking for too much
Why don't you show me the way
I sure would pay you well
I've got the money to buy
Why does nobody sell?

'You might have lots of money
And be blessed with a golden heart
But you cannot erase the past
And try to get back to the start'
'I don't want to extend my life
No more than is my share
Though for what there is left to live
I do need golden hair
Don't you think that's fair?

What do I do
Am I left behind
I'm not asking for too much
Why don't you show me the way
I sure would pay you well
I've got the money to buy
Why does nobody sell?

Have I reached my sunset time
That warming shine will not be waiting
Somewhere in the back of mind
I know my time is slowly fading

An I to analyze my good and bad
Or weigh the weight of right and wrong
Just when I think about my life
I wonder why...

The rich man didn't understand
That he walked a dead-end street
He couldn't find the jeweler's store
And his life seemed incomplete
Then he finally met a man
dressed in glory, gold and fame
And if they haven't died by now
They'll still look the same
While we're singing this refrain

What do we do
Are we left behind
We're not asking for too much
Why don't you show us the way
We sure would pay you well
We've got the money to buy
But why does nobody sell?
Do we have to go to hell?

Brilliant. This song has very complex keyboard patterns, but sticks with melodic integrity and Barry Palmer really elevated the vocals in Triumvirat. Pompeii is one of their best albums. Comparisons with other bands can be deadly so let me just say this is fully European sounding and should not be compared to many of the also amazing UK progressive classics and yes that includes ELP.

"É COM ENORME SAUDADE QUE REVEJO UMA PÉROLA DO ROCK PROGRESSIVO: POMPEII, DO TRIUNVIRAT. ESTE TRABALHO É SENSACIONAL! MARCOU TODA UMA ÉPOCA DE OURO DA NOSSA ADOLESCÊNCIA." - M.S.C.
