River
Troy Ramey Lyrics

Been traveling these wide roads for so long
My heart's been far, from you
Ten thousand, miles gone

Oh I wanna come here and give
Every part of me
But there's blood on my hands
And my lips aren't clean

In my darkness I remember
Momma's words reoccur to me
"Surrender to the good Lord,
And he'll wipe your slate clean"

Take me to your river, I wanna go
Oh oooh, take me to your river, I wanna know

Dip me in your smooth waters I'll, go in
As a man with many crimes
Come up for air, as my sins flow down the Jordan

Oh I wanna come here and, give every part of me
But there's blood on my hands
And my lips aren't clean

Take me to your river, I wanna go
Oh oooh, take me to your river, I wanna know

Wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
Wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
I Wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
Wanna go, wanna go, wanna go
Yeah I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know

Oh oooh, take me to your river, I wanna go
Oh oooh, take me to your river, I wanna know

Overall Meaning

Troy Ramey's "River" is a bluesy ballad about a man who yearns for redemption and forgiveness from the Lord. He has been traveling on wide roads for so long that his heart has been far from the Lord. He longs to give every part of himself to the Lord but feels unworthy because of the blood on his hands and the sins that stain his lips. In a moment of darkness, he remembers his mother's words to surrender to the Lord, and he asks to be taken to the river to wash away his sins and start anew.

The river is a metaphor for baptism and the cleansing of sins. The idea of dipping into the smooth waters and coming up for air as his sins flow down the Jordan is a reference to the biblical story of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River. The singer wants to be washed clean and start fresh, and the repeated refrain of "take me to your river, I wanna go, take me to your river, I wanna know" reinforces this desire.

The song is a powerful meditation on spiritual renewal and redemption. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can turn to the Lord for forgiveness and start anew. The imagery of the river is a potent symbol of this transformative power of faith.
