Texas
Tucker Tanya Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas, boys
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
New York couldn't hold my attention
Detroit City couldn't sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
When I die I may not go to heaven
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas, boys
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
I'd ride through all of Hell and half of Texas
Just to hear Willie Nelson sing a country song
Beer just ain't as cold in old Milwaukee
My body's here, but my soul's in San Antone
When I die I may not go to heaven
Well I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas, boys
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
When I die, well, I may not go to heaven
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas, boys
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
When I die, well, I may not go to heaven, no
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
When I die, well, I may not go to heaven, no
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas, boys
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
When I die well, I may not go to heaven, no
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas
Texas is as close as I've been
When I die well, I may not go to heaven, no
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas
'Cause Texas is as close as I've been
When I die, I may not go to heaven
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go
The song "Texas" by Tanya Tucker expresses the singer's love and attachment to the state of Texas. The lyrics convey the idea that although the singer is uncertain about whether or not she will go to heaven, she hopes that if cowboys are not allowed there, at least she can go to Texas, which she feels is as close to heaven as she has been. The song uses the contrast between different places the singer has been to emphasize her preference for the state of Texas. The lyrics suggest that even if something bad were to happen to her in Texas, she would not care because at least she would know that she is home.
The second verse of the song highlights the singer's infatuation with Texas culture and music, especially with Willie Nelson. The lyrics indicate that the singer would go through great lengths to hear Nelson sing a country song, even if it meant riding through all of Hell and half of Texas. The song also uses the contrast between Texas and other places, such as New York and Detroit City, to convey the uniqueness of Texas.
Overall, "Texas" is a tribute to the state of Texas and the country music culture that it represents. The song captures the spirit of the state and the deep emotional attachment people feel towards it.

Gorgeous classic song!!

My opinion is she has such a unique sound, much like Loretta Lynn has her own. So many female singers, men too, sound similar without any real flair of their own. Thereβs no one who sounds close to Loretta, she Tanya is much the same. This song always sounds great when she sings.

Great song, great artist! Why is Tanya not in the Country Music Hall of Fame?

I vaguely remember this version. I was working as a deejay at both a disco nightclub and a country radio station when this was released. If my memory is correct, this was the version that MCA shopped to country radio, which was the 45rpm single record. A somewhat rowdier version using a much more prominent saloon-style piano arrangement and a larger, (seemingly) louder singing chorus (made to sound like a saloon crowd) was included on the TNT album from which this is taken, and itβs the album version that I prefer. I remember recording the track from my own personal copy of the album to a cart so that I could play it on the radio whenever the single came up in rotation, and pretty soon the other deejays were all using it too. We would tell listeners when we were playing the album version and people would call in and request it that way.
Another funny memory about this song was when I played it at the club one night. A man came to the booth very excited at hearing it, wanted to know who it was and the name of the album, which of course I showed him. I found out later he was a drag queen, and that he made such a huge production out of this song, and had become locally very popular for it, and actually furthered his career as a drag performer. I went to see his show one night, first time I ever saw such a show, and it was really a lot of fun. The crowd was absolutely wild about this song!
