De Piscopo was born in Naples, the son of a drummer in an orchestra. In 1969 he moved to Turin, where he began a successful career as drummer for several popular artists, including Gerry Mulligan, Astor Piazzolla, Gato Barbieri, Lucio Dalla, Pino Daniele, Manu Chao and others. In 1974-1975 he was a member of New Trolls Atomic System.
He also wrote scores for several movies. His most successful song is "Andamento lento", which won Festivalbar in 1988. Outside Italy he became famous with his 1983 hit single Stop Bajon (Primavera). His song Radio Africa was a collaboration with singer Mory Kanté von Guinea

Queste canzoni ci hanno aiutati a restare vivi... Quando mi chiedo come abbiamo fatto in quegli anni... Ecco la risposta: qualcuno di noi, a casa e intorno, cantava questa canzone o un'altra, a seconda del momento, degli stati d'animo: era come invocare un dio, come fare un esorcismo, declamare un incantesimo, gettare un potente contro-maleficio. Era stare uniti, era sentirsi forti insieme, con la profondità della poesia fatta energia, con le parole, i ritmi, le voci, la melodia.
