Morphine
Tupelo Honey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold on
Feel the pressure and it's killing you
Hold on
Disconnected from the line I threw
Like a drop in the ocean
Nothing can change it
Wish I could change it
I feel your pain
Like it's hopping into me
What can I say
That could take it all away

But I will be
Your morphine
Your morphine

You're searching
For a sanctuary everywhere
But here
And I will cover you completely
Like a drop in the ocean

Nothing can change it
I wish I could change it

I feel your pain
Like it's hopping into me
What can I say
That could take it all away

But I will be
Your morphine
Your morphine

I feel your pain
Like it's hopping into me
What can I say
That could take it all away

I feel your pain
Like it's hopping into me

But I will be

But I will be
Your morphine

Overall Meaning

In the song "Morphine," Tupelo Honey sings about trying to comfort someone who is in pain and feeling helpless in doing so. The song begins with the lines "Hold on, feel the pressure and it's killing you. Hold on, disconnected from the line I threw." Here, the singer is urging the person to hold on and stay strong despite the overwhelming feelings of pressure and disconnection. The next lines, "Like a drop in the ocean, nothing can change it. Wish I could change it," reveal the singer's frustration in feeling like their efforts to help are small and insignificant. They wish they could change the situation, but they feel powerless to do so.

The chorus of the song is where the title "Morphine" comes into play. The singer says, "But I will be your morphine, your morphine." Here, they are offering themselves as a type of painkiller for the other person. The line "You're searching for a sanctuary everywhere but here" suggests that the person is looking for comfort and safety in places where it cannot be found. The singer acknowledges this and offers to "cover [them] completely," like a drop in the ocean. However, they still feel the weight of the other person's pain and wish they could do more to alleviate it.

Overall, "Morphine" is a touching song about trying to comfort someone in pain and feeling frustrated when one's efforts seem inadequate. The title and chorus serve as a metaphor for the singer's desire to ease the other person's pain and provide comfort.

Great video! The grey distorted effect with bursts of colour looks phenomenal! I love the intro with the natural harmonics on guitar. Not a lot of bands use those anymore and they add a nice touch! Great job Tupelo this new album is going to be a huge deal for you I wish you the best!

Wow! I heard snippets of the song, and I've seen the other videos, but this really caught me off guard. This is fantastic, artistic video. I didn't think I could possibly be more excited for the new CD, but I was wrong. I may have to drive up to Canada just to get the hard copy of the CD when it comes out (and after driving to see you guys in person, you know I'd do it, haha)
