I was told that if it glitters it don't mean that it's gold
So don't believe these actors all it is is a role
Play your part for the time being it'll lead to your goals
(Woah) I'm sounding like a motivational speaker
How? When I'm all the way in the back of the bleachers
Barely in the game, I'm watching from the side line
Thinking "damn", like when will it be my time?
Put aside the doubt and all of the second guessing and stressing
Over the shit that really should be a blessing
Anything can bring you down that's only if you let it
Forgive, but don't you ever forget it
Live, don't you ever regret it
All that other noise I don't hear it I dead it
Imma always go hard my nigga, yeah we can bet it, let's get it
(It goes) one for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
It goes one for the money
I'm just tryna make sure that me and mine won't ever go hungry
Seen many come and go my nigga trust me
Jermaine said, "it's Cole world", shit it must be
The game too, to get in gotta be lucky
"Poetic Justice", I'm tryna make it rapping like Lucky
Former class clown I just wanted to be funny
Now I'm all grown, no longer a kid, Cudi
I do it for the love of it
For the ones who came at me on some sucker shit
I just wanna let 'em know that they can suck a dick
Another reason I do it, I do it for the fuck of it
For my fam too
Even if they think that I'm nuts like cashews
For chasing the cream, do it knowing that cash rules
I learned that from Wu-Tang and Cass too
Me and Big Mo used to be in a rap group
That was back when, I was whack then
Now I'm a problem for these niggas when I grab pens
My future bright, couldn't picture with a bad lense
Lost a few on the way, they couldn't make it back since
I'm my brother's keeper that's if he wanna be kept
Niggas ain't moving right, so niggas got left
I'm my brother's keeper that's if he wanna be kept
Niggas wasn't moving right, so them niggas go left
(It goes) one for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I'll be damned if I ever complain
While my granny got cancer, I could measure the pain
Doctors operating and cutting into her flesh
She's living life like they ain't take both of her breasts
She fights it with a smile knowing well that it's killing her
I'm thinking that I should visit her
And thank her for birthing the woman that birthed me
I'm hoping she'll be around to meet my first seed
But I ain't ready yet
I wanna do it right, but in life that's not a chance that many get
Some do and still they choose to waste it
Why have a child if you're not ready to raise it
I can't keep the women in my life long
At least I got something to talk about when I write songs
See, I wanna make Amy my lady
But I don't wanna break her heart or have her hate me
This shit is crazy
I'm becoming the same nigga that made me
The same nigga that chose to marry my mother
He made vows knowing very well he was fucking another right under the covers
(Ha, motherfucker) Fast-forward, later I'm cheating too
See the same mistakes that he made are the ones that his son is repeating too
(It goes) one for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
One for the money, two for the love of it
Three for my family and four for the fuck of it
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
I do it for the love, money and my family
One without the other ain't enough for me
The lyrics of Turk's song "Do It for the Money" explore the motivation behind one's actions and the importance of different aspects in life such as love, money, and family. The artist questions whether individuals pursue their endeavors for the love of it or solely for financial gain. He implies that material possessions, represented by the phrase "if it glitters it don't mean that it's gold," do not necessarily bring true fulfillment. He cautions against putting too much trust in actors who only play a role, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself in order to achieve personal goals.
The artist conveys his own struggles and aspirations, expressing a desire to be recognized and to have his time in the spotlight. While he has faced setbacks and doubts, he has learned from his losses and turned them into valuable lessons. Turk encourages listeners to push past self-doubt and negative influences and to view challenges as blessings. He urges them not to dwell on past mistakes or regret their actions, but rather to forgive and move forward with determination.
The chorus repeats the phrase "one for the money, two for the love of it, three for my family, and four for the fuck of it." Here, Turk emphasizes the importance of finding balance between these four elements in his life. He acknowledges that he pursues his endeavors for the love, money, and support of his family. Without any one of these aspects, he feels incomplete. He also references the influence of his family in shaping his mindset and goals.
Turk reflects on his journey in the music industry, admitting that he used to be on the sidelines, observing others' success. He references the influential rapper J. Cole and the movie "Poetic Justice" as sources of inspiration. He describes his evolution from being a class clown to becoming a serious and respected artist. The artist also mentions his association with former rapper Big Mo and the lessons he learned from Wu-Tang Clan and Cassidy. Turk emphasizes his dedication to his craft and his determination to succeed, despite losing some friends along the way who couldn't keep up with his progress. He positions himself as a protector and supporter of his chosen family, distinguishing between those who deserve to be kept close and those who have strayed from the right path.
In the final verse, Turk shares personal struggles within his family, including his grandmother's battle with cancer. He recognizes her strength in the face of adversity and expresses his desire to visit her and express gratitude for raising the woman who gave birth to him. The artist discusses his own difficulties in maintaining relationships, highlighting the mistakes and infidelity of his own father and acknowledging that he, too, has made similar mistakes. He acknowledges the irony that he has become the same kind of person that his father was, repeating the same mistakes and hurting those he cares about. This vulnerability showcases the artist's self-awareness and willingness to confront his own flaws.
Overall, "Do It for the Money" conveys the artist's introspection and personal growth, while highlighting the importance of love, money, and family in his life. The lyrics delve into themes of self-determination, overcoming setbacks, and maintaining personal integrity. The song serves as a reminder to listeners to strive for balance and purpose in their pursuits, and to cherish and support their loved ones.
