Friends since they were five, the band grew up playing music together, from early teen-age house parties in their hometown of San Francisco, to multiple world tours. Throughout their extensive travels over the past 8 years – including recent tours through China and South Korea – Two Gallants have continued to evolve, both musically and personally.
The bands' very first single, "Nothing to You" (from their 2004 debut The Throes), started off a string of cult classics that helped define their signature sound. The success of the sophomore album, What the Toll Tells (2006), delivered a few more singles, including “Steady Rollin’” and “Las Cruces Jail”. The wistful “Seems Like Home to Me” from The Scenery of Farewell EP (2007) and “Despite What You’ve Been Told” from 2007’s self-titled album, provide the framework of the bands development into The Bloom and the Blight.
After six years of constant recording and touring, Two Gallants took a hiatus starting in the summer of 2008.
About their 2012 album, The Bloom and the Blight, Adam Stephens explained: “We’ve both gone through some hard stuff personally, so this album has that element of the cathartic, of a release of tension. We had taken time off, and we did different things, played in different bands. And in doing those things, being apart and redefining ourselves in that way, we were able to come together with a fresh approach.” The album's first single was "Broken Eyes".

A second hiatus began in 2016.

Ride Away
Two Gallants Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To see the sisters three
The only words that they could say
Were "Soon they'll come for thee"
As I went to the square
To see my brother hang
The only words that he could say
Ride away, ride away
Baby we will ride
Rest upon my shoulder
Until the morning light
As I went to the church
To let my soul be stilled
The only words that I could hear
Came echoing from the hill
Ride away, ride away
Baby we will ride
Sleep upon my should
While the bullets 'round us fly
Far away, far away
Way out past the world
Ride away, ride away
Baby we will ride
Sleep upon my shoulder
With a bullet in your side
Far away, far away
Way out past the world.
The song "Ride Away" by Two Gallants tells a story of a troubled individual who seeks solace but finds only more sadness and despair. The first verse shows the singer going up a hill to see the sisters three, probably referencing the Fates, who are the sisters that control the thread of life in Greek mythology. The sisters' ominous warning of "Soon they'll come for thee" further emphasizes the singer's inevitable doom. The second verse shows the singer going to see his brother hanged, and the words his brother speaks, "Til we meet again," further emphasize the theme of loss and finality. The third verse shows the singer seeking solace in religion, but instead, he hears echoes of the sisters' warning from the hill.
Throughout the song, the refrain of "Ride away" suggests a desire to escape from his troubles. The second line of "Baby we will ride" implies he is speaking to someone he loves, which suggests that he is not alone in his troubles. The line "Sleep upon my shoulder" suggests a desire for comfort and protection, even in the face of danger.
Overall, "Ride Away" is a powerful song that encapsulates the theme of loss, despair, and the longing for escape. It tells a story of a person seeking solace but finding none in a world that seems to be against them.
