Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
Tyler Ward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not a silly little moment,
It's not the storm before the calm.
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love that we've been working on.

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms.
Nobody's gonna come and save you,
We pulled too many false alarms.

We're going down,
And you can see it too.
We're going down,
And you know that we're doomed.
My dear,
We're slow dancing in a burning room.

I was the one you always dreamed of,
You were the one I tried to draw.
How dare you say it's nothing to me?
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw.

I'll make the most of all the sadness,
You'll be a bitch because you can.
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand.

We're going down,
And you can see it too.
We're going down,
And you know that we're doomed.
My dear,
We're slow dancing in a burning room.

Go cry about it - why don't you?
Go cry about it - why don't you?
Go cry about it - why don't you?

My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room,
Burning room,
Burning room,
Burning room,
Burning room.

Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?

Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tyler Ward's Slow Dancing in a Burning Room describe a relationship that is coming to an end. The first lines of the song suggest that this is not just a typical argument or a bump in the road, but the final dying breaths of the love they have built. The second stanza talks about the physical distance between them, and the feeling of missing something that was once there. The singer acknowledges that they cannot be saved and that they are continuing to drag out something that should have ended long ago.

The chorus paints a vivid image of the situation- they are slowly spiraling out of control, and they both know it. Despite this, they continue to dance, and the image of a burning room symbolizes the intense passion and pain that they both feel- it's both beautiful and dangerous. The third verse talks about the hurt that they are causing each other, a final attempt to convey their frustration and pain to one another. The repetition towards the end emphasizes the fact that they have had many chances to stop this from happening, but they have not taken any of them.

Yes, Favorite for Mom. This is wonderful. Thank you for sharing. Sounding spot on, as always. I've never heard this song before.

@13thAMG

Awww, that was really nice. Playing along with your mother, you can't buy those kinds of memories! Good job too. And your mother is a good pianist, obviously a musical talented family. All the best to you both.

@ja24

Such a great song, probably best song written by John Mayer

@Eddie303

I loved the performance of BOTH you and your mom ... SUPERB ... you did justice to John Mayer's song... Hoping to hear more from you both... Cheers.

@TheMinorscales

I think it is the right song for your voice. You have the emotion and the feeling of the song, in which your able to sing so impressive. To me though your mother, her piano accompanier, just sets the scene. Brings tears to my eyes :)

@BridgetD96

This is one of those songs where I couldn't just click out of the tab and check email or chat on facebook while I was listening listening. For these 2 minutes and 51 seconds, I sat transfixed, staring at the screen, surrounded by sound, beauty, and awe. That's got to say something about this song.

@hellolove237

I really appreciate the fact that you don't cuss in your songs and covers. Also, that if there's an inappropriate verse, you change it to be appropriate. So incredibly admirable. Thanks. =)

@joshee099

i don't think anyone can do john's songs justice. but you put your own little twist to it and it sounds pretty good.. good stuff bro.
