U-God was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. However he moved to Staten Island, New York as a youth. He was originally a beatboxer for clan affiliate Cappadonna, as well as being well known friends with future members Method Man, Inspectah Deck, and Raekwon. Sometime before the members united, U-God was mentored in rap by Cappadonna. He soon became friends with RZA and Ghostface Killah, and he began rhyming under the alias Golden Arms, based on the kung-fu movie The Kid with The Golden Arms. Later on narcotics possession prevented him from featuring heavily on the group's debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), his input on the seminal LP consisting of only a short bridge on the group's debut single "Protect Ya Neck" in 1992 as well as the famous opening verse of "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'". Nevertheless, after his release he quickly became known to fans for his rugged flow and bass-like voice on Wu tracks such as "Winter Warz", "Knuckleheadz", "Investigative Reports", and "Black Jesus". He was featured heavily on the group's second album Wu-Tang Forever on which he was one of only four of the group to get a solo track - "Black Shampoo" (While the others being Inspectah Deck with "The City", Ol' Dirty Bastard with "Dog Shit" and RZA with "Sunshower"; clan affiliate and singer Tekitha sang 'Second Coming' solo). Around this time his young son was accidentally shot and injured, an ordeal the rapper documented on the Wu-Tang Clan track "A Better Tomorrow". He appeared with all the clan members during the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors, as well as on tour for the release of Wu Tang Clan's latest album, 8 Diagrams. U-God released his third studio album Dopium in 2009 and touring around the globe in support of 8 Diagrams. He released his fourth studio album Keynote Speaker in 2013.

A Long Time Ago
U-God Lyrics

Hustled on the avenue of Lennox
That he was a don, shot dope in his arm
Paid visits to the methodon clinic
A straight womanizer, no religion
He just leaned on bitches
His name rung in the slums, niggaz run for they gun
Blood thirsty, he was so vicious
[Chorus]
Poppa was a rolling stone (he left a long time ago)
Poppa was a rolling stone (he never ever was at home, no, no)
Momma said daddy's dead (stop messing with the baby's head)
One day he'll grow up strong (one day he'll be a man)
Momma said father was a mean muthafucka
A clean muthafucka, a lean muthafucka
Got money in the pot, got his pops in the block
For sellings rocks, a dope fiend, muthafuckas
He struggled all his life, got blood on his knife
Light skinned, he had your eyes
But my mother couldn't handle him
The liquor, the gambling, plus he had four wives
[Chorus]
My mother said my father had a real bad temper
Loud, wild, he was too foul
With no hesitation, he would kill you
With no education, he was still proud
With his brother Big Harvey, he did a bank robbery
A car flipped, all the money spilled out
Before it was done, police caught him with some
Riddle of bullets, he died in a shootout
[Chorus x2]
The song "A Long Time Ago" by U-God is about a tumultuous relationship between the singer's mother and father. The lyrics reflect the father's struggles with drug addiction, womanizing, and violence. The singer's mother describes the father as a "real livewire" who hustled on the streets and visited addiction clinics. Despite his vices, the father had a reputation for being violent and bloodthirsty, causing fear among those in the slums where he was known.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Poppa was a rolling stone" which refers to a father who is never present and always on the move. The father's absence is further emphasized in the lyrics as the singer's mother says that he left a long time ago and that he never was at home. The father's death is also mentioned in the song, although it is not clear how or when he died.
The song suggests that the father's violent tendencies may have ultimately led to his death. The father is portrayed as having a "real bad temper" and killing without hesitation. The song also mentions a bank robbery and police shootout that led to the father's death.
Overall, the song "A Long Time Ago" is a reflection on the destructive relationship between the singer's parents and the impact it had on the singer's life. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a father who was both a source of fear and fascination, leaving a lasting impression on the singer's life.
