Door huiselijke omstandigheden moet U-Niq het voetbal uiteindelijk laten voor wat het is. Hij besluit zich vanaf dat moment honderd procent toe te leggen op zijn hiphop-carrière. Met succes! Hij staat in het voorprogramma van grote artiesten als Naughty By Nature, Das EFX en Lords Of The Underground. Op negentien-jarige leeftijd figureert hij in een videoclip van Késhaw (The Heat) en daarna begint hij hard te werken aan een eigen repertoire.
Hij tekent een contract bij Sony Epic, waar hij drie singles en een lp uitbrengt. Omdat Sony vijftien mensen moet ontslaan is de chaos binnen het bedrijf groot en de singles I Used To Cry, Yours Exclusive en Married To Music (tevens de titel van zijn debuutalbum) zijn daarvan de dupe, evenals zijn lp. Hoewel U-Niq na zijn Sony-fase ontmoedigd achterblijft, werk hij in de tijd die volgt samen met Amerikaanse rappers als NAS en Guru en met de Jamaicaanse artiest Red Rat. “Die gasten hoorden mijn nummers en hadden respect voor mijn skillz. Dat was natuurlijk een opsteker,” aldus U-Niq. Februari 2002 pakt hij het vliegtuig naar New York en daar neemt hij acht nieuwe nummers op. Een van die tracks, Wildin’ Out, wordt later door hem in eigen beheer gereleased. Er verschijnt bij deze single ook een videoclip.
In diezelfde fase is U-Niq onderdeel van Committee Gunmen, samen met Anonymous Mis, Shyrock, G-Boah (samen Postmen) Sonny D. en E-Life. Gedurende de vijf jaar dat deze mannen een click vormen, gebeurt er minder dan U-Niq hoopt. “We traden vooral op als Postmen ergens moest optreden. Maar op eigen titel deden we vrij weinig.” Als de heren in 2004 gezamenlijk besluiten de stekker uit Committee Gunmen te trekken, neemt U-Niq een adempauze. Langzaam begint hij na te denken over rappen in het Nederlands. Hij wikt en hij weegt en hij wikt en hij weegt. Nu is klaar met denken en ready for some action! Zijn handtekening staat onder een TopNotch contract en maart 2006 presenteert U-Niq zijn Nederlandstalige debuutalbum Rotterdam. De clip-shoot van de gelijknamige single zijn reeds afgerond en de clip van Rotterdam is nu te zien op de bekende muziekzenders. Rotterdam is terug!
“De langverwachte plaat is eindelijk gekomen!”
Dit zijn de eerste woorden waarmee het album Rotterdam van rapveteraan U-Niq begint. Vernoemt naar zijn geboortestad is dit na Married to Music uit 1999 het tweede soloproject van de normaalgesproken in het Engels rappende artiest. In hetzelfde jaar wat het levenslicht aan zijn debuutalbum gaf, droeg de Rotterdammer bij wijze van uitzondering in het Nederlands bij aan Zoute Uitval van Extince. Als hij enkele jaren later in het huis van bewaring zijn eerste volledige Nederlandstalige songs schrijft, overtuigt hij zichzelf dat hij klaar is voor een volledig album in het Nederlands. Zodra Rotterdam op 3 juli uitkomt, is het een jaar geleden dat de rapper weer op vrije voeten kwam te staan, waarna hij vrijwel onmiddellijk naar TopNotch belde om dát aan te kondigen waar gretige fans sinds 1999 op hebben zitten te wachten. “TopNotch heeft mij altijd toevertrouwd te willen helpen bij het uitbrengen van een Nederlandstalig project. De samenwerking is dan ook prima. Creatief ben ik geheel vrijgelaten en uiteindelijk is het geheel mooi tot elkaar samen gesmolten.” Aldus een tevreden U-Niq, die nooit tevoren zo trots was als dat hij op zijn album Rotterdam is.
In de producties van Concrete en SoulSearchin’ worden beats en rhymes geïntegreerd tot een warm, recht voor zijn raap en niet te moeilijk geheel waarin realiteit en oprechtheid vaak de grootste rollen spelen. ”Het zijn niet zomaar tracks die in het wilde weg opgenomen zijn, het zijn echt nummers waar over na is gedacht zodat je ze na één keer luisteren weer op kan zetten, en weer, en weer. Dat is iets wat ik door de jaren heen heb geleerd.” Uit Bajes en tracks als Mama met r&b-zanger Brace die tevens zijn neef is, met wie hij de onvoorwaardelijke liefde voor hun moeders deelt, blijkt dat U-Niq niet schuwt om de hand in eigen boezem te steken en zijn eigen fouten en verbeterpunten te bekijken. Alsof hij zijn leven presenteert op een zilveren dienblad komen emoties in alle vormen en maten voorbij met de liefde voor zijn moeder, muziek en de Rotterdamse straten zeer hoog in het vaandel. Bijgestaan door zijn broertje Eddy Ra wordt er in Waka Mang deels in het Surinaams gerapt en reflecteren ze hooghartig hun roots. U-Niq beperkt de gastbijdrages niet alleen tot zijn familie. Op Klein, Klein Jongetje geeft hij aan zijn havenstadsgenoot Feisel, die deel uit maakt van Straat Soldaten, de ruimte om te laten horen wat hij als aankomend talent in zijn mars heeft.
Met het feit dat het voor velen nog wennen is om de rapper in het Nederlands te horen buiten beschouwing gelaten verwacht U-Niq met Rotterdam veel mensen te verrassen. In de tweede plaats zullen zij verbaasd worden door bepaalde beatkeuzes en invalshoeken waar U-Niq voor kiest. De waarheid zoals U-Niq die ziet loopt als een rode draad door het album waarop tracks als Geschiedenis zelfs wenkbrauwen zullen doen fronzen, en kaken doen openvallen. ”Het is een persoonlijke boodschap die ik verkondig, het zit diep in mij. Het is de bedoeling dat mensen het serieus nemen en er iets mee gaan doen, meer niet.”
De titel is verre van een poging om andere steden in diskrediet te brengen. Dit blijkt ook wel uit het feit dat Sticks van Opgezwolle samen met Winne mee rapt op Kritiek, waarin harde feiten over ‘het wereldje’ worden aangekaart. ”Maar ook als hij er niet op had gestaan is het gewoon een titel die ik wilde kiezen omdat Rotterdam de basis is van mijn leven, het is de plek waar ik alle positieve en negatieve dingen in mijn leven heb meegemaakt. Rotterdam is lang niet naar buiten gekomen. Ik hoop dat mensen het kunnen waarderen dat ik op deze manier naar buiten kom en ze in mij de aangewezen persoon zien om deze stad op sleeptouw te nemen.” Op de remix van de reeds op internet te horen titeltrack geeft U-Niq zes bekende en minder bekende mederotterdammers, waaronder Feisel, Eddy Ra en Winne, de kans hun talent te laten horen. Met dit album en de remix van Rotterdam in het bijzonder luidt U-Niq een nieuw hoofdstuk van de eens zo florissante hiphopstad Rotterdam in.

@Dory Z it's not bc of their agency, it's bc of a political conflict between China and Korea. For the same reason Lay haven't been able to promote with exo for the past two years. That is why most of the Chinese idols in Korea are promoting mostly in China and elsewhere.
Also I guess there is no point for Yibo, at least (don't know about other members, have only seen the maknae being active), to go back to being an idol since he's now very popular in China as an actor, which brings him more money.
