Elevation

High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse, you elevate my soul

I've lost all self-control
Been living like a mole
Now going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you could educate my mind
Explain all these controls
I can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation

A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul, now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

Love
Lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true?
I believe in you

A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation

Overall Meaning

"Elevation" by U2 is an upbeat track that speaks about the transformative power of love, and it was featured on the album "All That You Can't Leave Behind." The lyrics suggest the singer is feeling lost, as if he’s been "living like a mole," but when he is with his lover, they raise him up to new heights of happiness by bringing him out of his blues with their love. The line "you make me feel like I can fly" is particularly telling, as it speaks of how love can make someone feel invincible, effortlessly soaring above their problems.

The title of the song, "Elevation," works on two levels. The first relates to the singer's desire to be lifted up, to get to a higher place both emotionally and physically. The second interpretation might be that love itself is the thing that elevates the singer. The song is a tribute to the transformative power of love and the joy it brings to our lives.

What can I say? I am 51 years old and I have been listening to U2 all of my life! Seen them in concert many times. Their music never gets old. Their music has helped me through many things in my life. I listened to them always through elementary school and high school. When I turned 17 I ended up getting Diabetes and their music really help me make it through the struggles of dealing with that at a young age. At 51 I still listen and believe they are the greatest band ever! I will enjoy their music till the day I die! Thank you U2!!!!

Same here my friend. Also, 51. I think it truly speaks volumes for the character of these amazingly talented guys. I can't count how many stories I see about U2 and how their music literally helped people to Endure during the most tragic and painful times in their life. One guy was in Iraq. Unbelievable! The guys should really see these comments! It is an honor to them.

I was 21 when Achtung Baby was released, which has since surpassed Joshua Tree. Anywho, sitting on a picnic table in the backyard with my friend's boyfriend who was a navy seal. They had the best damn parties🍻🍺😁 None of us had heard anything like U2, before or after. Also, Nirvana hit the scene. Same group of friends, we were hanging out in a dive bar in VA Beach, dive bars are the absolute Best! So, Smells like Teen Spirit comes on. Great times, even better music! I'm actually truly depressed 😞 that I was never aware of the Joshua Tree tour 30th Anniversary! Twice in the U.S.

Pretty much sums me up, too. 40 years and counting and living every minute. Saw every Australian your since 1984, both nights 2006 and 2009 , except for the last one in November 2019 as I was living overseas ❤️❤️❤️

Gonna be sad when this band retires. Same 4 guys for over 4 decades. Completely changed their sound half way through their career and did a full circle back to rock. Doing this - mind you - staying at the top of their colleagues and their game. Yes their much older, age is catching up to them. Bono isn't risking his life in the scaffolding anymore. But they are truly like fine wine, an aged whiskey that makes you feel refined while holding it in the hand. If you've been a fan since Boy, or joined the movement of change with Achtung Baby you cannot deny the smile this band puts on your face. Honestly, is their another band that has done this? Besides all of this, it's the emotional connection they bring. You are their personal friend for 2 hours - every night - show after show, year after year. I've since stopped going to shows. I'm old. But dang, their stamina blows me away. They're like our fathers and grandfathers showing us a spirit of strength we may have never known otherwise (unless you're religious). Many famous people will talk about this band for years to come. So here's my 2 cents that will probably never get read. That's ok. Rock on gents! ✌🏻🍻

That's why we have recordings brother.....it never ends
